Ma Harper's is fantastic food cooked by a woman who will make you feel like family. The Gumbo and Bread pudding are simply the best I've ever eaten anywhere. The Red Beans & Rice, Sausage, and Sweet Potato pie are delicious as well. Since everything is made fresh, it takes time, so only go there when you can have a long, pleasant meal. Plan to spend some time with Ma and her crew. The service is not generally fast but the food is always worth the wait. Ma offers the best red beans and rice and gumbo you'll find. Ma Harper depends on herbs and spices and very little fat to make her food flavorful. The fried catfish is cooked to perfection and the onion rings are really good; not the frozen kind but the ones cut up and battered right there. The cornbread is to live for. Take someone whose company you enjoy and relax with a glass of swamp water (ice tea and lemonade) and prepare to be pleased. more

Born and raised in Bayou country, but exiled to the Wonderful World of Tex-Mex, I am always seeking reminders of home cooking days-gone-by. Ma Harper's flavorful gumbo fills the bill. Rich, ""dangerously"" dark and full of grade A andouille, shrimp, smoked ham, and green onion...this is the stuff that I grew up eating and loving. Red beans and rice just like Granny made, is served hot and spicy too! Although I've limited myself to my favorites: Boudin with red beans and rice and that memorable gumbo, I'm sure the seafood (Shrimp, Catfish), chicken breasts and pork chops are up to standard. But why? Let's just say it: other than Ma's, we really don't have gumbo in the Alamo city. This is why I ride my little Honda to Ma's whenever I get the chance!
