I have to say, i like to consider myself a mexican food conniseur, especially having grown up on home made recipes my whole life. Having that said, i'm a little picky when dining out at such places. I have to say, i was more than pleasently surprised with Lupe's escape! The food was outstanding as well as the service i received. Even on a busy saturday night i was greeted with a warm welcome and a friendly smile. The food was as traditional as my grandmothers recipies and just as delicious!!! The margaritas are incredible as well!! Think, little home town diner meets family dinner table meets a small lil restraunt in mexico and that's Lupe's escape! Relaxed, fun atmosphere and good food and drink make this place every bit of the five stars i've given it!!! Pros: Carnitas plate dinner more

Best Margarita anywhere in the Portland Area 8/5/2006

After my friends found this little gem we were instant regulars. Sometimes it may get a little busy, but it is well worth the wait. The staff are always nice. Go with friends or family, we like to enjoy the outside patio with a blended margarita and my personal favorite the Tijuana Torpedo. We have always had good service, but never go expecting to be in and out fast (its not a fast food joint). Its best to enjoy a drink and munch on their chips and salsa while you wait. Prices are very reasonable compared to the quality of food, oh and did I mention the margaritas! There's plenty better 4/9/2006

Service is among the worst I have ever had. The two waitresses were friendly, when they bothered stopping by. But If you aren't a regular, you don't warrant much attention. 15 minute wait to order while the waitress is standing 10 feet away from you either on a personal call or talking to a regular customer. I have tried this restaurant three separate times, determined to like it. I had crappy service twice and passable service once. I will waste no more money here. The food is boring. Chicken for the chicken taco was totally unseasoned, just boiled chicken, no spices at all. The rest of what I had was bland and unexceptional. Mazatlan (near Safeway) just up TV is a much better bet. Pros: Close to my house Cons: bad service, bad food more

If your looking for a place that serves fresh food made when you order not the day before Lupe's is the place to go. The decor is a little rough but the food quality and serving size is the best. have not had a bad meal yet in the 10 plus years of going there. Pros: fresh made food, price, serving size more

I love mexican food and have been to many. This place has the most consistently good food I have found. Occasionally I will think, weel maybe I am missing something and will go somewhere esle but I never am satisfied. Always good, always friendly, always a good value. more

We've been doing Lupe's for 12 years now.....& will continue!! This funky little place has GREAT FOOD & good service. You can tell by all the regulars you see, that this place is definitely doing something right!! My company does take out for our lunch meetings all the time! Down Right Gross 7/20/2004

My Girlfriend and I went here and were highly dissapointed. The Decor is drab, the serivce was horrible and the food was gross. The waitress gave us chips that tasted like they hd been left out all month long, our food took 45 minutes to get served to us and when it did come all I wished it that I would have went Taco Bell. I Dont ever reccomend going to this place, there are tons of places to get good mexican food, and I dont see how anyone could ever think this is one of them. Cons: , Service, Value more

A great first visit 6/10/2004

After several years of saying ""we must try that place,"" we finally did! It definitely won't be our last visit to Lupe's! Our food was flavorful (WITHOUT the typical reliance on hot sauce to provide the only flavor). Reminded me of an old-fashioned ""diner"" with a Mexican flavor -- great service, good food, low prices. Regulars were greeted at the door and everyone was relaxed, having a great time. We'll be back! Pros: kid friendly, fun and cozy more

Family Favorite! 10/16/2003

We have been going to this place for YEARS! The restaurant is small, but the food makes up for it. Great specials that aren't always on the regular menu. The servers are FANTASTIC...you feel like you just stepped into their kitchen. We have been going there weekly for over 5 years...and will continue to. I liked Lupe's better than Chevy's mexiacan food. The food is all fresh but I have to say my dish didn't have lots of flavor to it. I'd like to go back and try some of the other dishes. Any Mexican place that has menudo on the menu has to be Authentic! more

I have eaten here once, but it was a dinner to remember. The enchelada with a fried egg on top was the BEST mexican food I have ever eaten! It was the closest to authentic mexican food I've found in the portland area. Alas I dont live to near the place, so I always forget its there. It is not often that you find wonderful mexican food, margaritas, and staff all in one place. This place definately has fresh and healthier mexican food. THe salsa is great and the service is (usually) exceptional. I have never eaten anything here that is not exceptionally fresh and exceptionally tasty, and I eat here a lot. From the outside it does not appear as much, but there is some wonderful food to be discovered inside. The service is always friendly and if you need more fire in your dish there is 'Dave's Insanity Sauce' behind the bar. more
