I have ate at a lot of sushi restaurants in LA and wanted to give Luckyfish a chance especially after seeing it air on the Hills. While the revolving sushi bar was very high-tech and impressive, and the atmosphere was hip, I was quite disappointed with the food. The sushi was very mediocre, nothing special at all. The servings/portions were small and the miso soup was served out of a Miso soup machine, not freshly made. Even though the sushi was freshly made, it was lacking taste and flavor. Randomly went here with my boyfriend one night, not expecting much, and we fell in LOVE with it. The fish is ridiculously fresh and I'm tough to please when it comes to sushi. Really tough. Epically tough. The only comparable sushi I've had is served at places like Nasawa or Sassabone - those ""trust the chef"" places. Every single dish is heaven. Plus the waitress was a sweetheart. The second time we went, the food was just as good, plus we had an amazing waiter AND the manager was there and was the coolest guy ever! Seriously. I can't believe this place isn't packed, but then again it's kinda nice, cause it makes it our special place. :). I especially love the albacore and tuna dishes under the cold dishes section, and the albacore sushi on its own. My boyfriend is a huge fan of their salmon and dynamite. SO GOOD. You all must go so that it's still here when I get back to LA in 5 weeks! I enjoyed lunch at Luckyfish on a weekday. Sure, I was leery of the conveyor-belt delivery system, despite the special system they have of pulling unselected dishes off after a specified period of time. Though some dishes suffer from this approach, such as the miso-glazed tempura rock shrimp, basic sushi fared fairly well. Their simple cucumber and seaweed sunomono was excellent. The menu is varied enough to suit anyone who enjoys Japanese food. The service was excellent, and our server was happy to replace our slightly doughy tempura shrimp from the conveyor with a nice, hot, crispy order directly from the kitchen. The short rib special needed a bit of work, as it was a tad too salty and was far too chewy; perhaps some braising or pressure-cooking would have helped. When I found out LuckyFish was from the same guys that run Katana, I was really excited and HAD to try it. I think my expectations were too high, though, because nothing I ate there really wowed me. Nothing was terrible, nothing was fantastic (except for the lychee martinis, Im always looking for them and they got it right!) I will say that the atmosphere is great and really fun, the type I would recommend for a group of friends wanting to have fun. The music they play (once the sun goes down) is also really really good. One warning: the prices on the menu seem low, but your bill will be high! The portions are silly small, which forces you to order several plates of the same dish and you end up with a bill much higher than you thought it would be. I would recommend this place to a friend, but warn them ahead of time that though they'll have fun, dont expect the best sushi ever. more

I was extremely pleased with my lunch outing here! My girlfriends and I were craving good sushi, but had to be back at the office within the hour. We were so impressed to find that it took under an hour to have a satisfying yet healthy meal. Thanks to the rotating belt, we were able to sit down and begin eating immediately. Not only were the employees friendly and accommodating, but the quality of fish was outstanding! I went with my boyfriend here last night for dinner. We were promptly seated by a friendly hostess and then greeted by our server--she was very attentive and sweet. the sushi was pretty good, some stood out from others--I really enjoyed the roll with shrimp and jalapenos--i cant remember the name Luckyfish called it...the Baked crab roll was also wicked good. The sashimi was also excellent. The drinks (I ordered the Infusion) were over priced--stick with the water or soda. The conveyor belt was fun to watch, the restaurant is really pretty. I'd go back again, but watch how much you eat. Our bill was $117 for 2 people! Granted, we came hungry and ate a lot, but watch out--it adds up quickly when you're just grabbing things off the belt! From the outside Luckyfish has all of the trappings of a hidden gem. Nice modern design, clean tabletops, service people nicely tailored and bright-eyed. The restaurant is inviting and you are immediately captured by the conveyors and covered plates. Then it hits you: is the high-tech conveyor enough to defeat every negative experience you've had at a robata, sushi 'boat' style restaurant outside of Tokyo. The answer sadly is NO. Great sushi has a shelf life of 10 minutes or less and you find yourself watching for the chefs to put the next dish onto the conveyor so you can grab it - far from a wonderful, casual experience that you want when you eat sushi. Some of those dishes clearly have been rotating for 1/2 an hour, oggled yet rejected by throngs of other sushi eaters around the table. The portions are less than generous and sadly lacking the personal touch of a sushi chef that creates your next raw, savory morsel to order. We tried to order some sushi off the menu from the chefs and it took a frustrating 1/2 an hour to get our food despite the restaurant being practically empty. Go to Whole Foods or Ralphs if you want B+ sushi without the aggravation. On the plus side, our server was attentive and very helpful getting our drinks to us. Unfortunately the booze did not mask the rest of our experience, we will not return again. Pros: Clean, nice and modern space. Staff is great. Marketing pieces are beautiful. I had a girls nite (group of 8) at Luckyfish last nite. Def a new hot spot to check out! The staff was really friendly, not only is the food on the conveyer belt yummy and available immediately for you to eat...their hot dishes were incredible. Highly reccommend the Dynomite Scallop hot dish in the shell and the baked cod! more
