Great Mexican in an Authentic Setting 9/12/2011

We took out of town guests here for authentic Mexican, and were not disappointed. Unique setting, great food, and friendly service makes this a go-to destination. Try it out soon for lunch or dinner....you will love it! more

Terrible! 3/12/2011

We waited for almost an hour for a ""20 minute"" wait and probably would have waited longer if my partner hadn't gone up to the desk. We walked through the restaurant and there were a LOT of empty and unbussed tables! Then, we were tucked away, almost totally ignored, and to top it all off, the food was mediocre at best. I am sooo disappointed! What has happened to this place? more

Not so good anymore 1/7/2011

We are sorry to say, after the recent several times at Los Olivos south, we are done with the restaurant. Los Olivos has seen better times during our 15 years dining there. The food has been degraded to overpriced mediocre at best. The service was similar to being slopped like hogs with, what appeared to be, disdain. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, open tables in all the rooms, we felt hurried to finish our meals, pay, and get out. We've enjoyed better, more amenable service and food in truck stops without all the T & A actions to get a tip. We had to request our eating utensils be replaced with clean, scary. DO NOT place your hands under the tables as the gum, God knows what else, is prevalent. Walls are dirty. If it should happen we are invited by friends to eat at Los Olivos again, I will take a sterile swab to the table top and bring to a friend's lab. I must admit, my husband enjoyed the waitresses' shows. The last evening did end well at home :), but dinners have sure been as much of a flop as the servers appeared to be. The girls need training in those areas, as well as the serving of food and beverages. Margaritas seem weaker than they were, and what used to be good salsa is now watered. Suggest passing on Los Olivos, leave it for the tourists. Perhaps enjoy a dinner at Carlsbad Tavern or Macayo's. Suggest passing on Los Sombreros Cafe & Cantina, as well, another very much way overpriced, cheap meats, small servings, service to match, restaurant in Scottsdale. It is a shame to see, what was a decent place for so long, Los Olivos, going out of business. more

Passby Los Olivos, after 20 years. 2/5/2010

Service was awful, dirty eating utensils, plates of food slammed on the table, sauce spilled on the table, had to ask for each beverage refill even w/ empty glasses on the edge of the table. The food hasn't been more than mediocre in the recent years at Los Olivos. The waitress made a show of jiggling her breasts at my husband rather than provide a reasonable modicum of food and beverage service. She showed no training at all, and less class as a person. I've only heard my husband mention once before, 'she was lucky to get a tip at all'. Staff people were standing around talking, joking, not much care for clients. It almost seemed like the staff, cashier and seaters included, were doing us a favor by providing the minimal service that they could get away with. Where we sat the walls were filthy dirty, even salsa splashes. It looked like somebody had blown their nose on the wall. Do NOT touch under the tables as there must be years of gum wads stuck under them, which is a hepatitus concern. I'm afraid to dine here anymore. At the time we were in the restaurant, it wasn't particularly busy, so there really aren't any excuses for such a lame dining experience. If dining at Los Olivos, or the style of food is mentioned again, both my husband and myself will suggest Frank & Lupe's on Marshall Way in Scottsdale. I'm sorry to say, Los Olivos has gone way down hill in the recent several years and prices have gone up considerably. I remember when there were a few good male servers at Los Olivos, but alas, only one we know of now. I've started to wonder how long the restaurant will be able to stay in business before being shunted out. Personally, I'll be sorry to see the restaurant close, but there are too many other good, clean eating places where clientele are treated w/ respect, good service, and good food for a fair price. Margaritas at Los Olivos are still good tho. Bottom line, pass by Los Olivos, much better elsewhere in Scottsdale and surrounding areas. ! . ! . ! . Pros: Just disappointment after disappointment Cons: Bad service, mediocre food, dirty, arrogant, haughty more

Our place for Mexican in Scottsdale 7/17/2009

Yes, it's kind of an old town Scottsdale touristy destination, but it's good Mexican home cooking, decent value, nice atmosphere, service good. If we're in the mood for Mexican this is where we go. My wife likes the marinated beef, I like the chicken crema, we both like the fajitas. And this is for only the old town restaurant, the other Los Olivos off 101 the service, food and atmosphere was way off, though it's nearer we wouldn't go back. Pros: Good spicy salsa, home cooking Cons: Could use a few more fish and poultry items more

Delicious homemade salsa! 4/4/2009

I was recently visiting Scottsdale for pleasure and I had heard good things about the ""authentic"" taste of this restaurant. The waitress was older and sassy, complete with a great sense of humor. Chips & salsa were tasty, and the margaritas had a decent amount of tequila in them! The beef tacos were delicious, and the guacamole was super-green (thus, super-fresh!). I'll definitely go back again the next time I'm in the Southwest. Pros: Funky decor, yummy food Cons: Entrance is hard to find! more

So Sad Olivos 8/22/2007

So Sad Olivos Pros: The Blue Room was pretty! Cons: Rude Help! more

Best Mexican Food in the Universe!!! 12/29/2006

This is the best Mexican food I have ever had. The service, food, and decor are all fantastic!! I highly recommend this to anyone that loves mexican food. more

A Classic That Still Has It! 8/2/2006

I was born in Scottsdale close to 40 years ago, and some of my favorite memories are of dancing to bands in the back room of Los Olivos. Cheese crisps were my favorite food then, and when I go back today, even living thousands of miles away, the food always lives up to my memories. Cheers for 40 years (and more) of consistency and excellence! Pros: Love the Donkey, Cheese Crisps, and the room with all of the stained glass Cons: parking can be tough when there are events at the civic center more

Best Mexican Restruant 7/16/2006

This is the best Mexican Restaurant I have ever been to. I used to live in Texas and this is better than any of the Mexican Restaurants there. Pros: This is the Best Mexican Food I have ever had Cons: Parking is limited in back but there is a parking garage right next to it though more

BEWARE! DONT GET SWINDLED! Mediocre Food! 4/30/2006

We arrive at 8:15 on a Friday night, the doorman promptly stopped us gestapo-style to inform us that we must pay a cover to go in the bar and buy a drink. The waiter then advised us that music would not begin until 10:00, we promptly left. On the way out, I questioned the doorman about the lack of entertainment and he said ""Do you want your money back"" to which I agreed. He reached into his pocket & pulled out the $10 bill we had paid with. He was low-classed, haughty and didnt bother to apologize, needless to say we wont be returning. This was Los Olivos' 3rd & final chance to redeem themselves, on prior visits we had food that was mediocre at best & service that was worse. FYI to the chef: when you feature a dish with huge prawns the customer shouldnt have to peel them! Pros: good parking, near better restauran Cons: unprofessional/rude, food not up to par more

Good Food, Good Value 1/2/2004

Los Olivos continues to survive city encroachment by offering good food at reasonable prices. Food consistencyvaries from time to time but one can always count on a fine, fun atmosphere, cheerful hosts, good service and good Sonoran food. Pros: Reliable, Consistent, Reasonable Cons: , Long wait in winter, parking more

Native 9/15/2003

I've been eating at Los Olivos for over 40 years. It's still the best authentic Southwest style Mexican food. My only complaint is that I can't still eat dinner for less than $1. more

Grande es Los Olivos 8/15/2003

An oldie but definitely a goodie. Park behind in the garage, step back in time, and enjoy food the way it use to prepared. From margaritas to homemade tortillas Los Olivos is the BEST! Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance more

The best in AZ 7/2/2003

IMO, Los Olivos is the best - and most consistent - Sonoran-style Mexican restaurant in Arizona. I've been coming here since 1985, driving from Tucson just to dine often, and have never had a bad meal in the 100+ times I've eaten here. The two table salsas are perfect...one is mild and has a cilantro touch, the other a hotter 'taco' sauce. Try the green chile, the beans, chicken burro, and rellanos. Thank you, Barry, for saving this place! Pros: Salsa, Location, Green Chile Cons: Only 1 location more

Excellent 5/28/2003

On a four day visit to the area, we ate here twice! Everything was very fresh. The fajitas, taco salad and carne asada were excellent. As of course were the margaritas! Tortilla chips are served with two excellent salsas - the chipotle salsa especially was my favorite, a little bit spicey and extremely flavorful. Pros: lots of parking, lots of menu choices more

The ""REAL"" Thing !! 6/26/2002

Recently had the pleasure of dining at Los Olivos while vacationing in the area. Excellent food, super friendly accomodating staff and very good prices for the quality and portions received. We returned for a second time before we left for home, and look forward to dining again on our next visit !! more
