Be careful in dealing with Los Angeles Van Rentals, specifically Jim. I called to rent a van and was pleasantly surprised that they were running a special at $99/day for an 8 passenger Minivan. I was also offered insurance at a price of $19.99 per day. At the conclusion of the call I asked for line item details of the charges. Jim told me that all of that would be detailed in the confirmation, and if I decided against taking the insurance or the van, I could cancel it. When I received the confirmation a day later, (because my e-mail address had been taken down incorrectly) the rate was now $119.95 and there was no insurance. When I questioned it, Jim said that he was on commission and requested the rate, but it was not approved. He also told me that the insurance was not listed because the owner did not want to insure a 2014 Toyota Sienna if I had my own insurance. And, he said, . . 'it is illegal to sell insurance on a rental car to someone who already has insurance.' I asked him how other rental companies got away with it, he said they were breaking the law (imagine that). Long story short, I arrived and was given a 2009 Toyota Sienna that had more dents and dirt than you would imagine. Why did I take it? Because I didn’t have time to go elsewhere at that point, and did I mention there was a $99 cancellation fee? I will be pursuing this with the State’s Attorney General as this was classic ‘bait and switch’ in both the rate and product. I am grateful for video and voice memos.
