Extortionists - Atlantis Marine World Aquarium, home of the 120,000 gallon shark tank........... 8/5/2007

but not one water drinking fountain for there patrons. We ended our mini-vacation to Riverhead at Atlantis. A family of 5, 2 adults, 3 children enter Atlantis when they open, on a HOT Saturday afternoon. We are greeted at the entrance by some people taking pictures. We enter the facility and pay at the cashier's. We stroll around the 1st leg of the facility, and there is plenty to see, we are all having a good time checking out the animals. The next leg we venture outside by the sea lions and are walking around for a bit in the hot sun. The kids say they are getting thirsty, so we head back inside to look for a water drinking fountain. We cannot locate one anywhere, even look near the restrooms. After looking a little longer I asked a few employees where I can locate a water drinking fountain. None of them can direct me to one. As we are talking to one a manager type person happens to stroll by. I ask her about the drinking fountain and she directs me to the cafe. We venture over to the cafe and find plenty of water on both the buffet line and also in the vending machines. Water is $2.75 a bottle. I ask one of the employees in the cafe about water, and they tell me they only have bottled water, or directs me to a hose outside by the sea lions. I end up buying water, but I feel like I have just been extorted for additional money. After paying eighty something dollars to enter this facility, I cannot believe they do not have such a common amenity as a water fountain. You have people, young and old, walking around in the hot sun. People can get heat stroke for crying out loud. They have water fountains in public parks, where people enter for free, but not at Atlantis. Huge corporations have donated TONS of money to this place, why not have one of them donate some $$$$ for a water fountain or 3 and give them a nice placard - "Water fountain donated by North Fork Bank". In my opinion this place is not worth it. Go to the Bronx Zoo, The Aquarium in Brooklyn or any other place where they at least have the decency to provide common amenities for patrons. I am surprised they did not have a lock on the bathroom door where you need to put money in to unlock it and use the facilities. I probably just gave them another extortion scheme! more

Great place for adults and children alike and worth the price 1/16/2007

Although the aquarium is a little pricey, the funds support lots of sea life research and is well worth the price. I also have a feeling that they've added things since the other people commented because we saw penguins and there was a large area where you could feed and pet some kind of rays. They also had displays of things I had never seen before and I've been to the Boston, New York City and Mystic aquariums. I loved it! more

Overpriced okay aquarium 10/9/2005

Small aquarium. Very expensive - $22/adult! One seal show - short, about 15 minutes.. Visitors are not allowed to feed the animals but you can watch the trainers. You can touch a sea urchin, crabs or a starfish when the staff person hands it to you. Shark tank was neat . Many kinds of different colored fish. Educational. Lots of walking but you can still only spend half a day here. more

Fun & Educational Aquarium for the whole family! 10/8/2005

This aquarium in Riverhead is a fun and educational place for kids and adults. They have a separate 2 hour boat ride on the Peconic River that costs $16 - 18 per person which was worth while. Inside the aquarium, there are many neat things to see. There are seal shows and the shark lagoon was a favorite! Touch tanks have starfish and crabs that you can hold. There are also parrots that were abandoned that they saved and snow monkeys! They also have some educational programs like trainer for a day and making crafts from beach materials or making slime and if you have $$, you can even have a birthday party here. more

great place for kids and adults 9/16/2005

The fee to get in is about $18 for adults and $16 for kids. When you first get there you can see the seals outside which is a good welcome. When you get inside there is a sting ray tank where you can touch the rays. I liked it as much as the kids did. There are sharks and penguins at this aquarium. There is also a cafeteria so you can get something to eat if you are making a day of the place. I was very pleased with the aquarium although I thought the price was a bit high the kids learned quite a bit, so I guess it's worth it. more

Good Place For Kids 8/12/2005

Atlantis is a good place to bring kids on a day off. It doesn't get too crowded and it is a very cool place. They have many fish that you can see very well. It is a little expensive but it is worth it. They also have many dolphin shows and tours to go on too. more

Small, but Entertaining 8/12/2005

This aquarium is a small, but fun way to spend part of your day. Children and adults will be delighted to see a wide array of tropical fish, sharks, sea lions, and many others. As it is one of the few aquariums on Long Island, this place is definitely one to check out. Since it's small, you can either spend the rest of the day riding a boat on the Peconic River or visit some other places in the area, such as the Long Island Game Farm. more

Lost City Found On LI 8/11/2005

Atlantis is quite a large aquarium and has a great many species of marine life to observe and learn about. Skip the 2 hour ecology tour ( it seems to bore any kid I've spoken to ) and concentrate on the cool design of the place and the interactive features like the where your kid can pet a stingray (!) or a horseshoe crab, or the large glass tanks that will give you the impression that you are almost in the water with fun things like sharks. more

Alright Aquarium 8/10/2005

Aquariums are truly never anything exciting to me, but Atlanis was alright. I don't think its worth the money or the trip though. You and your family could have more fun having a family fun day at the park. At Atlanis you just watch captured fish swim around in glass wondering where their ocean has gone. Kids can go swimming with marine animals, whcih seems kind of odd to me. The place wasn't very exciting, not worth it. more

Kids get to touch & feed! 8/9/2005

Atlantis Marine World Aquarium is a great way to spend the afternoon with the kids. They'll love seeing all the big fish - sharks, etc. - and they'll love participating in the touch & feed tanks. They do children's birthday parties here as well. Kids are guaranteed to have a good time here! Great way to spend some family fun time in Riverhead, Long Island! more

Great day in Riverhead 8/2/2005

Atlantis Marine World is relatively new to the Island, located right off the Peconic, offering a wide variety of sea life to look at, touch, and even feed! You can't miss Atlantis...look for the huge whale statue right outside! Sea lion shows take place daily, and for a really special adventure, you can actually swim with [small] sharks in a lagoon (additional fee). Check out the touch tanks, where aquarium staff are always on hand to guide and teach about the sealife. Don't miss the interactive salt marsh exhibit and get your feet wet. At the end of the day, there's a great gift shop and a small arcade. more

Educational and fun 8/2/2005

Atlantis Marine World features a shark tank with a Atlantis theme, many displays various marine life, a touch and feed tank, sea lion shows, and outdoor attractions. The Marine Hospital and Rehabilitation Center shows how marine creatures are rescued and rehabilitated. Children's parties and catered events can be held at Atlantis Marine World. Overall, this is a fun and educational destination. more

Its O - K 7/28/2005

This is a great small contained aquarium which is great to bring the kids to. There is a small sea lions show on most days and many other animals like sharks which are thrilling for kids to see. Since this is such a small aquarium it does not take the whole day to go through the whole place a few times over, even so, your kids will definitely enjoy it and get a kick out of seeing all the interesting animals on display. After you enjoy the aquarium you can take a ride on a boat across the Peconic River for some relaxing fun with the family. more
