This is a convenient accommodation if you are planning to climb Mt. St. Helen's. Otherwise it is a very basic old school roadside motel, nothing fancy and certainly no "resort" qualities. Price was reasonable and the only game in town of Cougar other than a B&B. The Lone Fir also issues climbers permits so it is very convenient for climbers. Assure you get the permit the night before if you plan on leaving very early in the morning. The room was clean but again very basic. Staff were nice and very helpful however they are not in the know about the recreational opportunities in the area. We found the restaurant attached very good for pizza, burgers, etc. They made a mean fried chicken basket and wrapped sandwiches in foil for our climb the next day. Server was kind and attentive. As this is the registration for climbing Mount Saint Helens it is a good place to talk to people coming down from a climb gleaning much needed information for the ascent.
Pros: 40 minute drive to Mount Saint Helens, economical, basic services available
Cons: A bit rough, not for high maintenance people, not everything works in room
