This shelter is amazing. They are a no kill shelter who takes the welfare of their animals seriously. \r There is adoption paperwork to complete and they can come to inspect according to their paperwork (although this never happened to me). However, comparing it to human adoption process is not fair. \r Their screening process includes not declawing cats. You might be surprised and dismayed to learn this, but it's cruel to the animals. Additionally they taught me to trim nails on a beautiful grey tabby who was the most relaxed cat I'd ever met. Lucky for me this cat has been my companion for many years now and is the source of greatest comfort and joy. \r My adoption fee included a cat carrier, treats, zoom groom, nail trimmer and free vet visit (being around other animals can mean your adopted pet might be slightly sick although completely curable). I used the vet visit to treat a minor viral infection that completely resolved. \r I recommend little shelter without hesitation. I've donated to them since because of how wonderful they are. Adopting an animal can change your life. Good luck! more

Little Shelter is fabulous. They've been doing this for over 80 years and they do everything they can to help their animals get adopted. They host events, go to malls with animals. I see them give animals beds, toys, blankets, much more than other shelters. Staff and volunteers truly care here. more

They won Best of Long Island 2013 for Best Rescue & Shelter. Obviously they're doing something right. Especially since they've won consecutively. more

Unfortunate experience with their pet cemetary 6/9/2011

I had a disheartening experience with Little Shelter. I purchased a double grave from the organization in and paid approx. $625. This was to enable me to also bury an additional cat there in the future. I contacted the organization to bury my second cat and I was told I needed to give them another $125 for internment to bury my second cat. There was never this charge the last time. I had to wait a full week and had to keep my cat's corpse in a freezer elsewhere trying to resolve this and then was told I could bring my dead cat there and bury it, that the situation was resolved. Another full week went by and my cat was now in their refridgerator but still not buried. I called 3 times begging to give me and cat the dignity of a burial but still some how this could not be accomplished. I have now officially given up on this and can't deal with this and them anymore. I don't know if they are over there heads or severely poorly managed but if you if you are considering connecting up with them in a significant way I would suggest you take a careful look at the organization to see if they merit greater respect than I feel for them right now. Additionally I will note that I had several conversations with staff at the organization and found a couple of the lower level employees there cold and not very nice. I hope the animals there are treated better than I was. more
