Each child learns at their own pace and in their own way. Some respond well to Montessori methods while others may find lack of structure to be too much to deal with. This is why Little Hornbook employs a combination of Reggio Emilia and Montessori teaching methods, all complimented by what we have learned from our 25 years of teaching young children. Ours is a one of a kind very flexible program which meets the diverse developmental needs of each child.
We believe in the open classroom approach, which is used by the more progressive schools. This provides overall visibility of all of the children, for better supervision by the staff as well as allowing pre-screened visitors to easily see all of the activities in each classroom area. Children find this freedom rewarding and develop independence, good concentration skills, and consideration of others while learning and playing. Much like the one room classrooms of years past, children quickly learn the self discipline to focus on the task at hand and to ignore distractions, as others transition from one activity to the next through out the day. When designing the facility, the owner was careful to put herself in the shoes of the children whom would often be at school for several hours each day. She thought about how restrictive it would be for children to spend hours in a small individual enclosed classroom having little or no outside visibility. The center is designed to be homelike , yet school oriented, with large open rooms and high ceilings. We even have a large indoor play structure for large muscle development for when the weather is too inclement to go outside. There is a large playhouse for creative play, a quiet puppet area, and a large theater room for music, languages, story telling, & visitors.
