Two legs or four (or wheels, for that matter,) all are welcome at this cozy, crunchy antidote to chain coffee houses. The coffee beans are all fair trade. The pastries are from Balthazar Bakery (yeah, that uber-hip place in Soho.) The vibe is neighborly and casual. New moms, bring your colicky babies in the mornings, when owner Mike Love grinds the beans. The humming is guaranteed to lull your munchkins to sleep, while you get your fix of decaf soy latte and NY Times. There's live music in the evenings, and on weekend afternoons. And for Coffee Lab's beloved canine visitors, there's doggie biscuits and a big ol' water bowl out front. Laptop junkies beware. There's no wireless service. And I for one long for some shabby chic couches here and there. Still, one try and you'll become a regular in no time.
