A Top-Notch Art Museum 2/16/2006

The Baltimore Museum of Art, called the BMA by locals, is one of my favorite art museums in the world. It's not a huge museum, but what it lacks in size it makes up in collections. The BMA consists of several permanent galleries, including the famous Matisse-packed Cone Collection, an impressive furniture and decorative arts wing, and jewelry and miniature collection, in addition to one large traveling exhibits gallery. The changing exhibits are almost always blockbuster, with recent shows being the Ballet Russe, Impressionists, and Turner's Watercolors and Guash. There's also a huge section of modern and abstract art; while it's not my favorite, it's quite impressive in scale and scope. There's also an outdoor sculpture garden, indoor courtyard, theater, exceptional café, and a fantastic gift shop. Hopkins students used to be able to get in free if they showed their student ID. Programming is plentiful here, so be alert for fantastic evening performances, family art workshops, and gallery talks. more

Great art pieces! 12/22/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art (or BMA as the locals call it) offers a really good selection of art pieces in the area. Located really close to the Johns Hopkins University north of the harbor, it is loved by both the young and old alike. It offers a sense of the old world flair that seems to have been lost in Baltimore in the past few decades. It definitely should be added to every list when visiting Baltimore! more

great collection 9/27/2005

What a great collection of artwork...they have such a great array of art through the periods. This place is ever changing. The gallery always has a traveling show of some sort and the Cone Sisters collection is one of the best in this country. Check it out on the first Thursday of each month for free admission. more

Variety of Art Exhibits 8/21/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art has a large variety of art displays. There is a whole section devoted to Native American art and artifacts, a collection of traditional American furniture, and displays of silver and metal crafts. There are also several galleries of classical art and paintings, the works you expect to see in an art museum. There’s usually coupons for buy 1 get 1 free entrances in the Baltimore Entertainment Book. more

The Baltimore Museum of Art 8/20/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art is what the name say, an art museum. The museum has great exhibits which are displayed for a period of time, then they are replaced with new exhibits, and other exhibits are permanent. The museum is open daily and offers tours by appointment and on certain days they give tours without appointment. It's a great place to see some good art and to learn. more

Cone Collection was just terrific 8/19/2005

I spent two delightful days at the Baltimore Art Museum and I can attest to its excellence. I not only enjoyed its terrific Cone Art Collection(Renoir,Matisse,Picasso,Kirschner,John Graham),I also its Old Master paintings very much(Raphael,Master of View of Saint Gudule,Rembrandt,Poussin,Frans Hals,Guardi,Corot,Couture). I also saw its splendid collection of Contemporary Art(Andy Warhol,Alice Neel,Robert Motherwell). In addition,I appreciated early American paintings by West, and Sully. This museum also has outstandinWashington Allston,Francis Guy,Benjamin g sculptings by Barye,Epstein, and Calder.Indeed, this museum was a treat located very close to John Hopkins University. more

Huge collections 8/17/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art has a huge variety and many different collections of paintings and other different forms of art. The building is set up very nicely and is a blast to walk around multiple times during the year. This is definitely the museum to stop off at first if you haven’t been before and you appreciate fine art. more

Great museum! 8/16/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art has an extensive collection of paintings and other mediums. The museum is well laid out, and is fun to explore. The gift shop has a lot of great gift ideas as well. The sculpture garden is also not to be missed. For anyone who enjoys art, the BMA is a great place to spend a rainy afternoon. more

BMA - free admission for Hopkins Students! 8/15/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art is right next to the Homewood Campus of the Johns Hopkins University. It's a great place to spend your time on the weekend if you don't have much work to do. The exhibits are very educational, and the art is absolutely stunning. Also, there is a restaurant connected to the Museum call Gertrude's which has very good, yet very decently priced food. In addition, sometimes, there is live music in the Sculpture Garden! This come highly recommended. Bring the kids (if you have!). more

Surprisely good art museum 8/15/2005

I do not think that people from out of town typically consider Baltimore to be a great town for art, but the city does have some surprisingly good museums and this is certainly one of them. Located right next door to Johns Hopkins University, the Baltimore Museum of Art is actually the largest museum in Maryland. It's got a good variety of works and it has an especially strong collection in Impressionism as well as 20th century art. Additionally, there are two outdoor sculpture gardens at the museum, a nice gift shop, and Gertrude's, a very well known restaurant with outdoor seating in the summer and a famous weekend brunch. more

Baltimore Museum of Art 8/3/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art looks and acts like a museum should--it's big and white and imposing and has a collection that seemingly covers everything. You want cultural artifacts? They've got them. Fine art? Check out the Cone Collection! Decorative Arts? I never knew chairs could be so interesting. Truly, while the Walters down the road specializes in fine art, the BMA's collection is more eclectic and varied. While this is appealing, it's also something of a problem. I find the layout of the museum confusing and the variety almost overwhelming. This is not to diminish the quality of the collections nor yet their accessibility; indeed, the BMA is the first place I'd take a family with young children or someone not keen on museums. But I find it best to approach the museum in small doses--plan on seeing just a few exhibits per visit and don't try to do it all. Admission is reasonable--$7 for adults; discounts for students and seniors, and those 18 and under are always free. more

Excellent selection 7/29/2005

The Baltimore Museum of Art has an extensive collection and good special exhibits. It is a little large and not entirely logical in its layout, so my family finds smaller galleries like the Walters more accessible, but it's definitely worth a trip. Check often for special activities, especially children's days that make art history more fun for little ones. more
