In current times, when time is money and faster is better, one seldom finds someone who gives that extra little bit of effort. I would like to tell you about such a person. We recently had the sad task of putting our beloved miniature schnauzer to sleep. After over 15 years of faithful companionship, it is seemed so unkind to take him to an impersonal office for this final act of love we could give him. We were resigned that this was our only option, as this was the only place our vet would do euthanizations, until a friend told us about Dr. Cindy Weigley of Liberty Mobile Veterinary Service. Dr. Weigley had never met us, never treated Romeo, and had no reason other than her devotion to animals to help us out. She was willing to drive to the Poconos, where we live, to euthanize our beloved Romeo. We decided to take him for one last walk in the woods, at the home of friends in Hope, NJ. She came to the place we had chosen, at a time convenient to us and made it as peaceful and wonderful an experience as was possible. Her obvious compassion and caring for Romeo was evident the minute she came near him. Her gentle touch and soft words put him, and us, at ease immediately. She listened to our stories about him and empathized with the difficult decision we had made. When we were finally ready, she gently took him from this life to the next. Her professionalism, explaining everything that would happen so that we would not be shocked or surprised, made his passing as peaceful for us as it was for him. She treated his remains with that same gentleness and respect when she took him from us for cremation. But most of all she cared for us and grieved with us. We just wanted others to know that there still are vets like Dr. Weigley out there.
