We drove up to Chimayo for the day and were very hungry when we got there. We had heard the food at Leona's was supposed to be excellent, and that the Tamales were some of the best in state. I ordered the Roast Beef & Bean Burrito ($4.95), my wife ordered a Tamale ($1.50) and a Chicken Taco ($3.50). When the food was ready the first thing that struck me was the size of the Burrito, it was very small, like the size of a 99c Bean Burrito from Taco Bell. The Roast Beef was pretty tasty but the Red Chile was nothing special. It certainly didnt satisfy my appetite. My wife's $3.50 Taco was a basic small taco that you could get anywhere else in NM for 75c. She did like her Tamale though it wouldve been nice to have some Red Chile on the side to dip. I went to get a drink refill and they wanted to charge me extra for it.
Its a cute little place and if youre from out of state and have never had any kind of NM/Mexican cuisine before you will probably think its just fine. If you live in NM the only reason to eat here is if you simply cant wait to eat when you head back home. Overpriced, Tiny Portions, not worth the time or money.
Pros: the only restaurant in Chimayo
Cons: tiny portions, high prices = bad value
