Calm before the storm! 7/29/2006

I have visited this location many times. This bar has a more bohemian eclectic feel. Always a laid back and calming atmosphere. Every time a new person's on the turntables spinning everything from salsa infused techno to rock. One plus is it’s not so loud you can actually have a conversation. The back patio area is my personal favorite place to relax. Though the patio is a bit small it is encompassed with great outdoor lighting formed in geometric patterns on the fence. This is a great place to pre-party before hitting the flats or the warehouse district. The list of martini's is endless and they are all great (trust me, I think I've had everyone!) However, a few drinks may take a toll on your wallet and don’t expect your drink in two seconds flat either. It takes time to make a good cocktail……..and they do. Only problem with this review is that they also offer a food menu. I never had the time but seen and heard mixed reviews from my friends. more

Nice place for a drink 9/12/2005

I like the Lava Lounge during the week, after work, for a drink. It's a nice space with usually good service. I'm not so fond of the weekends, when the space is extremely crowded and the service gets wacked. A word of caution: do not run a tab when the bar is busy. You will not believe what ends up on your bill. I've had drinks and food no one in my party even ordered show up on my tab, and the bartender's excuse was that she thought they were with me. Inexcusable. There's usually good music playing, but no dance floor space, so I always feel bad for the dj. I'm not a fan of the food either - the kitchen does not strike me as the most sanitary of places (you'll understand when you see the location and open format), and honestly, the food is ridiculously overpriced. Case in point: chips and guacamole $8.00! Stop by for a drink on a weeknight and you'll not be disappointed. Any other time - enter at your own risk. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Behind the misleading screen door is an assortment of retro accoutrements--the kinds one pays too much for at Lorain Avenue antique shops. There are animal-print lamps, lava lamps, amoeba-shaped cocktail tables and bright pink holiday lights. The music, which isn't too loud to chat over, ranges from Erykah Badu to obscure electronica.

    The Draw
Before 10pm, you'll find locals in dirty tank tops, folks on their way home from the office and random passersby heading for The Flats or Lakewood. By 11:30pm, the trendsetters are in the house. Straight, gay, black, white, guys, girls and everyone in-between. The crowd is packed in elbow to elbow, especially on live-DJ nights. The place is owned by the same restaurateurs who run Fat Cats, so you can expect unusual yet well-prepared food, on the 15-item appetizer menu.
