Largo Nature Preserve is a fascinating and educational place to visit! A 31-acre nature park virtually surrounded by water located just off of East Bay drive - behind the golf course is where you'll find this hidden preserve. Bring your walking shoes and a drink with you on those hot days. Walk along side the 5-mile kayak/canoe route while you watch local exotic birds and turtles. If you're lucky you'll see a river otter. On down the lane is an observation tower - trek up and take in nature at it's finest - or just stop to take a breath. From there you are able to go into the trail lined "forest" (this is what my kids call it). On the trail you will be able to observe many different animals (over 130 species of birds, otters, red fox, American alligator, marsh rabbits, wild turkey, and bats). And if all of this doesn't exhaust you - take a trip to the butterfly garden!
On our last trip here - we saw two different families of ducks and alligators. We were also able to see an Osprey catch a fish out of the fishing pond and take it to her family. Amazed my children! An experience they will not soon forget. Be sure to go either early morning or later afternoon to catch all of the animal action!
