This unique shop, located along the many shops on Front Street in historic Lahaina, specializes in the display and sale of scrimshaw, an ancient maritime artform involving the carving or etching into a material, such as bone or ivory. A huge collection with many impressive pieces fill the store. It's fascinating to learn that scrimshanders engraved on bone from ancient fossils of the extinct wooly mammoth, or walrus ivory, antler bone, and of course, whale teeth. Designs on scrimshaw vary but one of the most popular is of whaling scenes. My husband and I were very interested in a collection of scrimshaw depicting the characters from the movie "The Wizard of Oz" -- each done on a different material. My husband would love to start a collection of scrimshaw. This is a definite stop when shopping or just walking through Lahaina's Front Street quarter. Their website is very informative website: www.lahainascrimshaw.com.
