Wonderful experience - if it changed, I am thankful for it! 8/8/2011

This place was suggested to me and a wonderful surprise!! The food was fabulous as was the service. The pride in their market/ restaurant shows as well as their gratitude to the customers. It was our first visit and Louis brought the table free appetizers to try (and freshly made ones for late joiners!) I am excited to go back and experience the evenings with bands and salsa dancing! more

It's changed ! 2/27/2011

I'll admit it's been a while since I've been here. What happened?\r Groceries gone. Family that used to be here gone. Menuu basically the same, but NOT the same food. Used to have the best Cuban sandwich ever. Now, not so much. more

Great place 6/30/2009

We had dinner here and really enjoyed it. The food was very authentic and the service was great. This is a real neighborhood place with a friendly family vibe. I am suprised that more people don't know about it. It used to be just a grocery store, but now it is a grocery store, restaurant and carry out. I highly recommend it. Pros: Family business more

the best cuban food in town!!! 12/31/2008

I know this little dive and st. louisans you're missing out on some great food at great prices! I've had the ""cubano"" and let me tell you the meat was so succulent! I had a mouth of flavor that describes a food odessey that is the greatest ! And regular folk aren't used to this type of comfort food, but man oh man its sooo good !!! I won't even mention the empanadas, and the rice, you guys want good cuban and latino fare? This place has it, and the staff is humble and generous- my kind of place!!!! The shelves are always stocked and the family is in the place giving you the best of what they know, friendly family service and good food, and also stuff you can buy and take home, you can't beat it, and its soo ""mama mia"" good!!!! Pros: great food, and great environment! Cons: parking on street more

Great Cuban and Mexican 6/27/2007

I've been to this place many times and it's one of the best markets in St. Louis. My favorites are the burritos and the Cuban sandwiches. Make sure to walk around the market and see all of the different selections. more

If only there were more than one 1/31/2006

It's a sizeable drive for me to get there, but it's worth it every time. If you have the least bit of a taste for either Cuban or Mexican food, their menu is HUGE, and will inevitably have something you'll like, not to mention the occasional special or two posted up at the counter. It might be a tiny restaurant inside a grocery store, sure, but that gives you all that many more imported beverages to choose from, and if you show up on the right day at the right time, there will be live music to accompany your meal. It seems like many of the items are reheated, but honestly, it's all good enough that it doesn't matter. I've had their Cuban sandwich, enchiladas, empanadas, and cactus salad, and nothing's been less than great. Pros: Variety, occasional live music, grocery has pastries Cons: Reheated food? more

Great Mexican food.... 11/12/2005

I grew up in Mexico, so when I came to St Louis I was pretty much resigned to have to eat ""american"" mexican food (althoug I try to avoid it at all cost). I came to La tropicana to buy some groceries but didn't try the food... I came back some time later and tried the food... wow it was pretty good. The owners are cuban, so there are some caribbean dishes in the menu. However I found the mexican dishes to be pretty good, the enchiladas, carnitas and mole are all good. But the dish that I really recommend is the nopalitos salad (cactus salad). The atmosphere is pretty laid back, you basically order what you want at the counter and then pick it up. I went with a large goup and it was a bit disordered... but hey I guess even that is part of the latin ambience. Pros: great food, inexpensive, very informal Cons: disorganized more

Not do good 12/1/2002

I grew up in Florida and am married to a hispanic man- I know good cuban food- this is not it. The rice and beans were weak and the pork was unflavorful and greasy. We were both disappointed because we were missing Cuban food, since in Florida it s all over the place. I think maybe the Cubans who run this place have been in St lois too long. more
