Although Humboldt County is famous for excellent produce and dairy products, it's not known for for its great restaurants, and since moving here recently from the Northwest I've found good Mexican food particularly elusive. But La Chaparrita serves the best I've found here, comparing well to my favorite places in Central and Southern California and the Skagit Valley in Washington.\r

The owner, David Cruz Perez, opened La Chaparrita to bring the "comfort food" of his home State of Hidalgo to the attention of Eurekans. It's a small place and the atmosphere is basic, but the service is warm and friendly and the food is excellent - we had the barbacoa, a spicy dish of slow-cooked lamb, and an excellent pozole, traditional spicy hominy soup garnished with cilantro, onion and jalapenos. \r

We'll be going back - La Chaparrita is now "our" Mexican restaurant in Eureka.
