We have used three different nursing homes in the New Braunfels area and one in San Marcos over the years with my parents. I want to be fair on this because I think all nursing homes are motivated by profit, and that not necessarily bad. But, you need to understand that at times these facilities will be under staffed. I found the food at Kirkwood to be on par with…well, hospital food. It wasn’t bad, just not gourmet. I found the nursing staff to be technically competent but stretched thin at times. The facilities always smelled good (if you have looked around, you know what I mean here) and were clean. The PT folks were actually very good.\r \r In short, if you are looking for a place to dump your loved one and expect it to be a resort, those places are out there, but Kirkwood isn’t one of them. If you will be visiting frequently, establishing a relationship with the staff, and plan on being your loved ones advocate, I could recommend Kirkwood.\r more

The staff @ Kirkwood Manor leave everything to be desired. My family member was very unhappy there because he never got his meds on time, in fact went to the nurses station to get his meds more than once. The food was horrible. All Kirkwood Manor cares about is the buck they bring in. Point in case, they discharged my family member because there was no way for us to pay the 142 dollar co-pay that I had told them up front we couldn't pay @ which time I was told not to worry about it, that the co-pay could be waived, it had been done before. I feel he was discharged because he complained and also because he refused to do PT on days that he was feeling particularly weak ( he has severe heart failure w/only a 20% ejection fracture). They are using the co-pay as an excuse. They have sent him home to die where it will traumatize all of us, especially me. I said all they care about is the buck but that's not exactly accurate. If you complain about the shoddy and maltreatment you receive there they boot you out and don't care what your condition is. They are horrible. They are also untruthful. more

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR LOVED ONES IN KIRKWOOD MANOR!!!!! Nursing staff is lazy, incompetent and understaffed. Food is horrible and lacks any nutritional value. Our father was in Kirkwood a little over two weeks and hated every minute. He died in Kirkwood, don't make the same mistake we did. Look for a better facility. more

While some of the staff members are 5/28/2012

While some of the staff members are fantastic, others leave something to be desired. A family member has been there for only a week and can't get her medications with any regularity. I asked for her pain medications repeatedly for five hours one day with no results even though she should have had them every two hours. We asked a staff RN to assist her in going to the bathroom and were refused with the excuse that she was wearing an adult diaper so they would just change her later. Morning assistance going to the bathroom took over thirty minutes to come. When she was first checked in the air conditioner in her room was malfunctioning, though it was 95 degrees outside and the only thing we could get out of the staff was about it was that they have been replacing some of the units and can only do a certain amount each month and they had already done all of the units for that month. They did, however, get someone in to fix it 3-4 days later. Pros: null Cons: null more

Looking for the place for mom 10/22/2009

After mom fell and broke her hip she spent 2 weeks in the hospital. Her progress was very poor and they said she would not be able to get back to her old self. Well, after a 3 month stay in Kirkwood's rehab unit she did so well they scheduled a home eval. I am happy to report she is home now but misses all the attention she recieved. Pros: Very friendly staff, smells good, cleanest nursing home Cons: So far everything has been great! more
