The Scene
Tip Sheet
Ranger walks and horseback riding are excellent ways to get your bearings and catch a glimpse of the famous giant sequoia trees.
Parking is plentiful and many lots are situated near the campsites themselves.
For those who don't intend to camp out, lodging is available year-round in nearby Sequoia Park's Wuksachi Village (888-252-5757). Cedar Grove (559-335-5500) is open during the summer, and Grant Grove Lodge (559-335-5500) is open all year. Often overlooked, this 458,847-acre national park that is often overlooked in favor of its highly visited neighbor. Area folks will testify that, in many ways, Kings Canyon rivals neighboring Yosemite with crashing waterfalls and breathtaking vistas More than anything, Kings Canyon is a hiker's park, with day hikes to spectacular Mist Falls and backcountry hiking to several peaks in the area.
When to Go
The park is full of year-round activities, but warmer months make hiking, the park's mainstay, pleasant and possible. Winter offers cross-country skiing and brings out the Nation's Christmas Tree, a giant sequoia in Grant Grove, with a Yuletide ceremony honoring lives lost in wartime.
What to Bring
Hiking boots or shoes, a sturdy backpack, and plenty of water are necessary to navigate the numerous trails. When the peaks are white, be sure to pack your ski gear, goggles or shades, and an insulated coat to combat the chill. Anglers shouldn't forget their equipment, tackle, and licenses. Barbara E.
