To be avoided 5/2/2011

If I could give Kim's negative stars, I would; it certain falls below the minimum 1 star ""eh"" rating. I left my grandmother's watch with him in Nov 2010, he told me it required a part that needed to be found (it's a very old watch for which parts are no longer made, I understand this). Over the next 6 months he kept placating me by assuring me that the part will eventually come. After enough of this, I asked that he put the watch back together (he took it apart and left it in pieces) and return it to me; it took 5 visits over the next 3 weeks (after the initial 6 months) with increasing levels of unpleasantness on my part to get the watch back in the same state as I left it in. He always said the watch would be ready sometime in the near future and it never was. Each and ever time I went to pick it up, he never knew where the watch was and spent upwards of ten minutes trying to locate it in his disaster of a work area. Given his extreme unprofessionalism, I now doubt he even attempted to get the watch part. If you value either your time or your sanity, do not use this watchmaker. more

Most inexpensive 10/5/2010

I went to Kim's yesterday and I got three new watch batteries and he shortened the band of one watch -- all for 32 dollars. I waited while he did all the work. This is by far the most inexpensive basic watch repair place I have found in DC. I spent 25 dollars for a band adjustment in Union Station - and it wasn't even right and they refused to fix it. more

Beware of leaving your jewelry with Mr. Kim 8/1/2010

While Mr. Kim is an extremely nice and friendly man, I hope that I never have to deal with him again. I took two necklaces to Mr. Kim’s to be repaired. He told me it would be one week and the price seemed right, so I left them. A week later, I showed up to retrieve my jewelry, only to be told that a part had not arrived yet, but it would be arriving tomorrow and to come back in three days. Three days later when I showed up, he said he needed one more week. I then took to calling before showing up. He twice told me that they would be ready the next day and to come in after 2:00 and when I showed up, not only had he seemed to have lost the pieces, (he gives you a slip with a number on it, but there seems to be no system to keep track of these numbers attached to each piece) but, once again, the necklaces were not ready. The last time I showed up, I told him I was going out of town and I just wanted a realistic estimate for when the necklaces would be ready. He told me to come back in an hour. Both pieces were ready for pick-up. I later realized though that one of the necklaces was missing some beads! I took it back and he assured me that the beads had not been in the original bag. After I made him check, he found the beads and reattached them by the next day. He was very sweet and apologetic each time, but by the time it was all said and done, it had been over two months! On the plus side, he didn’t make me pay for anything. He also promised to give me store credit, which he did not. But that’s fine, because I don’t think I’ll be back any time soon. Pros: Friendly and good prices Cons: It takes FOREVER!!! more
