Disappointing 7/23/2008

I wanted to like this place... it's within walking distance and I love sushi. The restaurant is extremely loud... and what's with the Christmas lights on the inside? I was hoping that the food would make up for the sensory overload, but it just wasn't good. Pros: .....? Cons: loud, bad ambience more

mediocre at best. don't know what everyone else is talking about... 3/17/2008

ok first off the bar is fun and drinks are cheap, the service is decent, and everything is prompt that being said the fish is not fresh, the portions are average, and the rolls are seriously lacking in quality of composition. i'm not sure what passes for sushi in venice, but i live in hollywood and i can't remember the last time i was that disappointed with sushi up in my neck of the woods. Pros: good bar, cheap drinks Cons: everything else more

LOYAL CUSTOMERS 3/13/2008

Great chefs! Great Sushi! My family has been regulars for almost 5 years and it only gets better every time we go. The staff has become friends and we aren't the only people who feel that way ... they seem to have a loyal customer base. As for the food, if our 10 year old will eat it - it HAS to be good! The sushi pieces are generous and fresh! Pros: Sushi, staff Cons: seating is scarce and this place fills up FAST! more

Best Local Sushi Joint So Far 9/18/2007

Great food, service, ambience and location. I love good sushi and cannot ever have enough of it. This is so far the best I have found around the neighborhood. The seafood is very fresh and all the sushi/sashimi/rolls I have tried so far are great. They keep the food simple: fresh fish, great cuts, tasty lightly-flavored sushi rice & flavorful wasabi (some places have such bad wasabi I felt necessary to point it out). The amount that is given per order is pretty decent too. The service is pretty quick and the waitresses are nice & kinda cute, which works for me. The decoration is pretty cool too, how a comfortable local sushi joint should be. The location is great b/c is right at the beginning of the strip you can still find parking on the street if you don't mind walking a little bit and really don't want to valet your car. Pros: Tasty Fresh Sushi, Great Service, Parking Cons: Can't Say I Have One more

Great Sushi 11/20/2006

I was invited here by a friend and do not live in close proximity but will make the drive anytime to go here. The Sushi is the best. They give you large pieces that hang over the rice, it literally melts in your mouth. You absolutely have to sit at the sushi bar because the chefs are welcoming and lots of fun. Not only will you enjoy the food but you will have a great time eating it as well. Pros: Large pieces of sushi more

So right for so many reasons... 11/1/2006

I've been eating here for years, ever since I moved into the neighborhood. First and most importantly, the food is great. The fish is of the highest quality, served in massive slices that hang over the rice. Order from the menu and you'll be fine, but if you let the chefs create special dishes for you, you'll be blown away. Also, each and every person who works there treats you like family, and if you sit at the sushi bar you'll have the time of your life with the chefs. Since it's primarily a local crowd, the people eating there are as friendly as the staff and make everyone feel welcome. One cautionary note, however, is that some of the humor at the sushi bar can be, um, blue...from the chefs and patrons alike. Still, I've never had a problem bringing friends and family, all of whom leave loving the place. There's a full cocktail bar to relax at before and after dinner, too. Everybody's got their arguments about the best sushi in LA, but taking everything into account --from food to price to people-- this is LA's very best sushi restaurant. Pros: Great food, warm and wonderful staff, friendly crowd Cons: I'm occasionally forced to eat elsewhere more

THE BEST SUSHI JOINT ANYWHERE ON THE WESTSIDE 10/19/2006

This little "Neighborhood Hot-Spot" shouldn't be a "Neighborhood Hot-Spot"---it should be an "LA Hot-Spot!" The staff is warm and inviting, the atmosphere fun and whimsical with strands of Christmas lights hanging everywhere... its not a place where you drive by and immediately think "I have to try that out" but once you get in the door, you are absolutely hooked! I am convinced that my boyfriend and I pay the mortgage there every month--there have been weeks where we've gone in four nights in a row! If there is even one negative thing I would say, its that the price of their vegetable sushi rolls is really overpriced--but hey, you get what you pay for, and at Kifune you always get quality. Pros: Food, Service, Staff Cons: Some Pricing (not all!) more

Great sushi, even better service! 7/2/2006

Kifune does not disappoint! Sushi is fresh - generously sized. The management and staff are incredibly friendly. Locals love the sushi bar where the lively chefs prepare delicious food and create a light and friendly atmosphere to "help you relax after working hard all week". Pros: Fun, great food more

Awesome sushi 3/29/2006

I have been to A LOT of sushi places in LA and this has got to be up at the top of this list. The fish and wasabi are so fresh. You must get the smoked salmon sashimi (but you better get there before it runs out!) Sushi lovers will love Kifune. Pros: fun atmospher, food! more

Favorite Neighborhood Sushi Bar 2/11/2006

I used to live just down the street from Kifrune and would frequently walk over at least once a week with my husband. The servers and wait staff were always so very friendly. The food was always great - even if you didn't order sushi. And, the price isn't too bad, comparatively. Kifune is one of the many things I really miss about our old neighborhood. It's excellent! Pros: Service, Great Sushi more

excellent 10/5/2005

Tiger Ibara 9/15/2004

This is the best sushi restaurant in LA if you like great fish and xxx joke telling chefs. Sit at the bar with all the locals and listen to head chef Tiger Ibara tell jokes and hit on women while he prepares the best fish in LA. You have to eat the salmon. more

Better than I expected 10/23/2003

Some good stuff. The BSC roll was nice. It's a good neighborhood place. I wouldn't drive to it. more

It's A Neighborhood Treasure 7/18/2003

I hesitate to write too much, for fear that the place will be overrun by new people and I will no longer get my spot at the sushi bar. I eat here once a week, sometimes twice. The food is amazing, the chefs are creative...usually I just say, "make something (insert adjective)" and they invent a roll or adapt an existing menu item to suit my tastes. We're all on a first name basis, and on any given night, I'll also know at least 2 people dining at the bar. Proposals, first dates, holiday dinners...I've been there for all of them...and hoisted many a glass in the process. Pros: Valet Parking more

Favorite Fish 1/17/2003

Friendly, fun place for all to have great sushi. We've been eating here for years and have felt like family from the first visit. After frequenting sushi bars from top to bottom, we still prefer the quality of fish and casual company at Kifune. Pros: NEW valet service more

Maybe the Cooked Food is OK 6/13/2002

I don't know what there teriyaki is like, but I have tried the sushi and once was definitely enough. Regulars raved about it--I wanted to take them by the hand and lead them to a good sushi restaurant. The atmosphere was certainly fun--lots of people buying drinks for the sushi chefs, but I would not go back there unless I was going to try the cooked food. Pros: festive atmosphere Cons: didn't like the sushi more
