ICED COFEE: what a way to beat that Texas Heat 10/15/2011

I dont know about you guys, but that Texas heat can be pretty miserable. I like to beat the heat by cooling down with the cold brewed Iced Coffee at kick butt. Seriously, you can't get any better than this. So 1. the coffee is amazing 2. The Staff just put a ray of sunshine in your day! They are always cheery and if your a regular believe me they will know you by name and your drink of choice! Lisa is one of my favorites, she is so friendly with everyone that walks in that door and you can tell she knows there story, about there kids, and all. What a great place to enjoy a good cup of cold brew! more

Best Coffee in Texas 10/10/2011

Aroma, flavorful coffee, and great food menu is only a taste of surprizises that will kick your butt. The cute name and martical arts decor really caught our eye when we first came to Austin. We tried out all the coffee houses and liked Kick Butt so much that we drive down from Georgetown and frequent both of their sites. We were pleasently surprized to find that the owner, Thomas Gohring, also teaches martical arts lessons at his dojo. My daughter holds a third degree black belt and has enjoyed intriguing conversations with him. We enjoy girl time together for coffee or drinks from their full bar. The food is very good with the menu expanding each month. We have attended open poetry on Sunday nights. Next I wish to join them for Monday night food ball fun. See you there! Sheree :) more

Nothing special 12/15/2008

Visited this place once a few months ago. The coffee wasn't that special. Interesting decor looks more like a sushi place rather than a coffeehouse. Seemed kinda sterile. They do have free wireless internet. Overall I wasn't impressed. Other places in town are much more warm and inviting and have much better coffee. Pros: Free internet Cons: Coffee more

Great Chocolate Frapps! 10/27/2008

I decided to go to Kick Butt coffee this weekend after reading reviews listed on here and I was not dissapointed! They have the most delicious Chocolate Frapps a girl could ask for=) What I liked about it the most is that it didnt feel as heavy as other Frapps usually do and it had this wonderful chocolate after taste that was so delicious it left me wanting more. I also liked the decor, my only complaint would be that I stood at the counter waiting to put my order in for a good 10 minutes without ever being acknowledged by the barista who was standing by the espresso machine making a drink. The place was not busy at all and I know she was making a drink for someone else however I do believe she could have said Hello and I will be right with you but she didnt nor did the girl who came in a few minutes later and just stood by the blenders talking to her as more people started coming in behind me. Pros: Great drinks! Cons: Be prepared to be ignored if the Barista is making a drink, not so much as a Hello =( more

Java and Martial arts: the perfect blend 7/17/2008

This is a nice review from Lindsey Mullikin of Austin Monthly Magazine: WHILE CHATTING WITH A BANK TELLER about the lack of coffee shops along Airport Boulevard, Thomas Gohring came up with what he thought was a kick-butt idea. Merging his love of martial arts (he also owns Master Gohring's Tai Chi & Kung Fu) with the community's need for a little pick-me-up, he opened Kick Butt Coffee in February. Red walls, nunchucks, bamboo and oriental fans illustrate the business' ties to martial arts. The shop, which serves coffee, wine, beer and liquor, has round, cozy booths, a giant plasma screen TV and a Wii gaming system. But Gohring wanted to build more of a nighttime business in an area largely limited to daytime traffic. He asked his sister Joy, a stand-up comedian, to help start a weekly open mic night, and Kick Butt Comedy was born. The small coffee shop even opened its stage to out-of-town musicians, including John Biz, Aim Low Kid and Christpher Denny, during South by Southwest. Gohring built off that music foundation in May with a bimonthly blues [dance] night. While martial arts, coffee, comedy and music may seem like random patchwork, it's all tied together with a single thread, Gohring explains. ""It kind of boils down to one question that we ask ourselves every step of the way: Is it kick-butt?"" Pros: It's Kick Butt Cons: Only one location. more

Keep Austin Wired with Kick Butt Coffee! 7/17/2008

I started drinking coffee after my visit to Hawaii over 25 years ago. I really enjoyed the bold flavor and aroma of a good cup of joe. I have been searching for a long time to find a place that reminds me of my first taste of good coffee and Kick Butt coffee does just that. I have tried all of the other trendy coffee shops and I feel as if I?m in a fast food restaurant line to get a cup of expensive and sometimes not so good coffee. Once you step inside the doors of Kick Butt coffee the aroma of the fresh ground beans slaps you in the face, wakes you up and makes you happy. Ahhhh, Coffee! \r \r The main differences between Kick Butt and the ?other ?coffee shops ?burnt beans? in town is the atmosphere, true baristas and the full bar. It is inviting and relaxing just like Austin. The martial arts theme is Kick Butt along with the Chinese art and bamboo plants. The Wii is fun to play with friends yet is not to noisy to hold a conversation with your spouse or friends. Being able to watch Kung Fu movies on the large screen TV is awesome especially if you have some time to waste. \r \r The coffee lattes are really good and tasty and if you are not a coffee lover then try the smoothies, frappies and chai tea. They are the best in Austin and are made using natural sugar. No artifical stuff in these drinks. I feel good about spending my money at a true local coffeehouse and not just another chain store. \r \r There are so many reasons to stop by Kick Butt Coffee with something going on everyday of the week no matter what your tastes are like. Stop in sometime soon. Pros: Great Service more

You'll see why Kick Butt rules Austin coffee houses 7/9/2008

Happy employees and a welcoming environment make Kick Butt a place to see and be seen. But drop any \r pretense because it is a typically laid-back Austin crowd - with talent and skills to share and develop. \r From comedy to music to poetry, Kick Butt has attracted a creative community like no other. \r \r For out-of-towners, you will feel right at home the moment you walk in. Though it may appear somewhat \r formal, seating is open and it is just cozy enough for a date or small business meeting. \r \r Studious writers will also find a daytime haven for the perpetual isolation of writing and creating. There \r is just enough buzz and traffic around you to feel at home (but yet not at home - where distractions \r abound).\r \r Unique and simple, Kick Butt has a social cycle like no other coffee shop in Austin: crowds and fun for \r comedy and music and serene times for concentration and just enjoying a nice cup-o-jo.\r \r Stop by. You'll see.\r \r (P.S. Master Gohring asked me to write a review - so that I can enter the contest.) Pros: Ambience more

There's No Other Place Like It! 7/9/2008

I'm not just writing this because Master Gohring asked me to; I'm writing this because I really think Kick Butt Coffee is unique.\r \r Where else in the world are the non-alcoholic drinks as cool as the alcoholic ones?\r Where else in the world can you hear jazz, blues, dance music, AND comedy?\r Where else in the world can you also participate? (open mics, both comedy and music)\r Where else in the world can you also get a work-out? (Wii)\r Where else in the world can you also get some work done? (WiFi)\r Where else in the world can work for a family outing, a date night, an afternoon hang, or a late-night pub crawl?\r \r If you haven't been to Kick Butt Coffee, you really need to check it out. All the ingredients for the coffee and bar drinks are top-notch (i.e., Kick Butt!). There is a huge variety of entertainment and events going on. Kick Butt has a friendly, neighborhood feel yet has something for everyone.\r \r My favorite drink there is the Chai tea - the best I've ever tasted. Come to Kick Butt and find your favorite drink. more

Not just coffee 7/7/2008

Master Gohring asked me to write an honest review, so I said: ""Sure, why not?"" I want to help get the word out about Kick Butt Coffee. When I first saw Kick Butt Coffee being built, I was excited. At the time I worked near the place it was being built at, and soon would be moving to the area. (By the time it was built, however, I got a better job and now work too far from it to come and get coffee on my lunch break.) Soon after it opened, my husband and I visited. I wasn't expecting much from a small place in a strip center, but I was pleasantly surprised by everything they offered. Yes, there was coffee (which is the main draw for a caffeine fiend like myself), but there was also a Wii, a big-screen TV (on which to play the Wii or watch movies), and really nice decor. The game system was a big draw for us to return. Upon returning, I discovered the alcoholic beverages, which are really excellent-- I love the ""Chai Matey."" Now I can get booze and coffee at the same place! The coffee is also good. I like to get the mint mocha, because unlike some other mochas elsewhere it's not so sweet that I can only bear to drink half. I only wish that it was closer to work, because now on weekdays they have pizza for lunch. Pros: Good drinks, close to home Cons: Too far from work more

Kick Butt... the name says it all! 5/27/2008

Outstanding coffee (100% arabica beans, triple-filtered water, locally roasted), a laid-back atmosphere, authentic martial arts decor, freshly-made-to-order organic pizzas and salads, pastries, beer, wine, liquor, (amazing) sake, comedy nights (improv/stand-up), live music (open mic/jazz night), free wi-fi, local artwork displays, classic kung fu movies and a Wii-- what more could Austin look for in a coffee shop? \r \r There is ample seating room, whether you prefer small tables and chairs (that are easily rearranged), big, cushy booths, barstools or ottomans. Come alone to study or hang out with your book club or motorcycle group-- anything goes. It's ideal for a first date as a relaxed, get-to-know-you destination (share a plate of garlic knots and sip white chocolate raspberitinis) before venturing downtown.\r \r My favourite event is the open mic comedy (wednesdays, 8pm) but find myself regularly attending most of them. I am lucky enough to also work at this fantabulous establishment, which allows me to witness the passion applied to both the products and events (by staff and patrons alike). We cater to our regulars (Prefer a liquor that we don't carry? Let us know; we'll keep your spirit on-hand.) and are always looking for ways to secure more.\r \r A must-experience Austin original! more

Sophisticated yet fun ambiance, lots of tasty choices, GREAT study spot 5/18/2008

Finally a non-starbucks coffee shop near me! This place is one of the small austin buisnesses we're trying to keep Austin wierd with. I've never seen a Ninja-themed coffee shop before, but they pulled it off in a surprisingly classy way. great ambiance, lots of local flavor from visual artists, musicians, comedians, and more. Lots of comfortable seating make this a great place to study. On nights with no special events, the ambiance music is pleasant and won't grate on your nerves over time like at some venues. If you're not the studious type, you can always play the Wii or watch a movie. Pros: Great hang out spot, live events for local artists Cons: It's small. more
