I went to Kenro's Japanese Restaurant for the first time tonight. I was first pleasantly surprised when I called ahead for hours and directions and encountered real JAPANESE-speaking people (so many local "Japanese" restaurants in Sacramento are not Japanese owned or run- and often have no one on board who actually speaks Japanese).
Next, I felt very welcomed when we pulled up after getting a little lost and were greeted by none other than Kenro himself-the owner and one of the sushi chefs. He actually came outside and welcomed us in. I don't believe I've encountered that kind of old-school/old world hospitality in these parts.
The food was very good, and the company and conversation were pleasant. We sat at the sushi bar, so we got to be up-close and personal with Kenro, who is originally from Matsuyama (Sacramento's sister city, by the way).
Well, anyway, the final pleasant surprise at Kenro's was that they had some very authentically Japanese dishes that I haven't eaten in years! And that I've never even seen in ANY restaurant in the Sacramento area!
I had a good time and will definitely go again.
