Awful for Lunch 8/19/2009

I eat here regularly for dinner and have never had a complaint on the service or food. The sushi is fresh, and creative. So I decided to try it for lunch...what a waste. The portions are embarrassing. My plate include four pieces of california roll and three half-sized pieces of sushi. Really? The best you could do for a "special" was half a cali roll and half-sized sushi? When I asked the chef about this, he was indifference and asked me if I wanted to buy something else. Skip this place for lunch, unless you're on a diet. Pros: fresh Cons: miniscule portions more

Not great. 3/16/2009

I stopped in for lunch the other day after a movie at Crossroads. The restaurant appeared clean and the service was good. My beverages were quickly refilled as I emptied them. The food, however, left much to be desired. The rolls I sampled were nothing spectacular, and way too expensive. I don't mind paying 9-11 bucks for a roll if it's a good roll, but these were inadequate considering the price. The soft-shell crab in my spider roll was overcooked. The volcano roll was served cold (which isn't wrong, per se, but most places I've eaten serve it warm, so I was taken aback by the cold "lava". I ordered my favorite nigiri, hamachi, and I had to sp1t it out because the texture and flavor just weren't right. It's supposed to be a soft fish with a delicate citrusy flavor, but this was tough and fishy. Yuck. I won't be back. Pros: convenient to shopping, good service Cons: price, flavor more

What a find! 7/15/2008

I went here to grab a qick bite expecting nothing spectacular. To my surprise the sushi was incredible! Really fresh and clean taste. I loved it! The atomosphere and decor is horrible and I read the other reviews about the lousy service, but I sat at the Sushi bar and they were not busy and I had no trouble with service! I'm so pleased to have found this place! Pros: SUSHI! Cons: the atmoshere and decor more

Best Sushi 5/16/2008

I've been going to Kashin's since '95 and this is by far the best Sushi you will find in the area. I have had problems with service in the past but not recently. The staff is now very friendly and attentive. The food other than the Sushi is also excellent, and please note that this is Japanese food not Chinese. Compared to Waraji, sure the Nigiri pieces are slightly bigger but the Sushi here is consistently better quality and unlike Waraja, I look forward to coming here to order the appetizers. Pros: best sushi quality, great friendly service, best value, best Japanese food more

Worst service 5/1/2008

If you have a party of more than 4 people, they'll charge you 20% gratuity, which is quite acceptable. BUT WATCH OUT! since you already have to pay the 20% gratuity, they won't do anything to "earn" the tips. I.e., the waitress will come over asking your drink, then order food, then deliver food, then give you a check. That's it.....Nothing else....Not even refilling your sweet tea! The food is terrible, too. I eat Japanese food all the time...This restaurant is no where near authentic, nor does it tastes anything near "just OK"! If you got too much money and too much time to spent, and want to practice some anger management, this is the right place to go though. more

Great tasting sushi 2/24/2008

Every few weeks I crave good sushi, and Kashin always delivers. The restaurant is small and located in a strip shopping center, but once inside it provides a nice atmosphere. The sushi chef is very friendly and accommodating and the sushi tastes very fresh. If you tire of grocery store sushi, I'd recommend Kashin. Pros: Great tasting sushi Cons: Service is only average more

Good sushi, worst service I have ever, EVER had! 5/17/2007

I go out for sushi about once a week and like to try all the different restaurants in the area. I always seem to feel like Japanese restaurants are understaffed because my drink always seems to sit empty for a while, but I love the food and the waitstaff is usually so apologetic and considerate that I don't mind it. However, the one and only time I have eaten at this specific restaurant it went a little like this: My boyfriend and I walked in around 7:30, we stood behind another couple at the door for about 15 minutes before someone cleaned off two glass at the sushi bar to sit us down. (I beleive it was a manager that sat us.) Around 7:55 (yes after 10 minutes of sitting down) our waitress came to take our drink order. At 8:14 we got our drinks (I know this because my boyfriend said we were leaving if we didn't get our order taken by 8:15.) We gave her our order right away. We ordered an entree to split and a side of sushi. We got the sushi within minutes, passed to us over the bar by the sushi chef. The sushi was excellent!!! However, around 8:30 my boyfriend's tea was empty, our sushi was gone and my water glass was nothing but ice. Our waitress never came back, and each time we repeatedly tried to wave or call to get her attention, she put her head down and walked right passed us. How she managed to ignore us is beyond me, we were sat right next to the entrance to the kitchen and at the end of the sushi bar where she had to come to pick up everyone elses food. At 9:05 she dropped off our check and said (exactly) "Don't worry, I didn't charge you for the stuff you didn't get". WHAT! Well were we ever going to get it? We ended up eating 1 sushi roll between the two of us, never got a refill, never saw a manager and never got any explanation. We even asked to speak to a manager when she came to take our money but our waitress didn't even acknowledge our request, SHE WALKED AWAY! Who does that? Pros: Sushi was good Cons: Can't rate the rest of the food I ordered because I never tasted it. Horrible service! more

Amazing sushi, good service. 4/8/2007

Best sushi I've had in some time. Attentive waitstaff make for pleasurable dining. Lite music and slightly dimmed lights at night make for a romantic atmosphere. It's fun to sit in the room with the holes in the floor when you have a party of more than 3 or so. If you're feeling lonely, you can always chat with the sushi chef. He seems pretty cool. Try the katsudon for a taste of Japanese comfort food if you're tired of that boring old chicken tareyaki. Pros: great sushi, friendly service, lovely ambience Cons: sometimes a long wait on Friday nights and weekends.. more

Good sushi 9/12/2006

The place has really good sushi. It is a bit expensive though. Even if you dont spend a lot to eat, it still comes out to around $20 a person. The service is sometimes not good. The wait staff dont always remember to refill your drink or bring/pick up your check. The sushi chef is very nice and very good though. It has a cozy atmosphere but I wouldnt recommend it for a romantic date. All in all, I still eat there because it is good. The pros out weigh the cons most of the time. Pros: Great Sushi! Cons: Price and Service more

Authentic Feel and Taste! 6/16/2006

My girlfreind and I were looking for a place to get sushi and maybe japaness too. Well, Kashin hit the nail on the head. Its small and quite without being empty or lonely. Great service, decorations and menu. A huge sushi list with daily specials / custom creations. HIGHLY RECOMENDED. I created a Citysearch profile so I could rave about it! more

real japan! 1/3/2006

We stopped by during Christmas shoppinf and I was really suprised by the authenticity of the place. I travel to Jaoan a couple of times a year and found this place to be a copy of what it feels like to go to a restaurant in japan. The sushi was excellenent and shumai was great! Arigato-gozaimasu! Pros: excellent food, authentic cusine more

Downhill - FAST 3/19/2005

This used to be our favorite Sushi place. After one mediocre experience I decided to give it one last try. What a disaster! The fish had that 'not so fresh' taste, both of our rolls had fallen apart BEFORE arrival, and the salmon skin tasted soggy. I've been eating sushi for many years and the salmon skin was always crunchy. When I brought this up to the head waitress she dismissed me as a non-cultural amatuer. The only saving grace was the apology from the chef and his directive to take it off the bill. The menu has always been blah compared to 'Americanized' sushi restaurants but the authentic feeling always brought us back. No complaints about the chef or our waitress but the management must acknowledge that the only thing they have going for them is the location. Until they 'wake up' I will spend my dollars elsewhere. Pros: Location, Ambiance Cons: Freshness, Flair, Preparation more

Excellent... 3/20/2004

The sushi is excellent. The atmosphere has a nice coziness to it and authentic feel. Do not let its location in a mall fool you; I'm glad I took the chance; this is an excellent Japanese sushi place. I go there every week for lunch and have not been disappointed once. Other reviewers comment on the service, I have had no problems, but I have only been at the sushi bar where the Sushi Chefs have always been keen on my needs. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Coziness more

not worth the money 7/18/2003

I went there with a friend one night. The waitress was not friendly, she didn't refill drinks. we had to wait a long time before the food arrived, so we just sat there and sat there. When the food got to the table, the size of the sushi roll was very small. too small. Our bill was like $74 dollars, and we didn't even order too much. The service was bad, the food was ok. but it is surely not worth the money. Pros: the food is ok Cons: The food is too small, The place is small, too expensive more

BEST SUSHI 4/7/2003

I travel a lot and eat out al the time. I have stopped by various Japanese restaurants like Waragi and sushi blues to name a few, but I have to say that Kashin has the freshest tuna of all of the rest and the most authentic japanese food on their menu. I am tired of fake japanese restaurants and am very glad I found Kashin. I'll be here every other week(when I am in town). Pros: REAL Japanese food more

good food, bad service 2/9/2003

No doubt, their food is testy, but I wont go their again for sure. I don't think that it is worth to wait 30 more minutes in lunch time just for a bowl of Japanese noodle w/ a fried shrimp in it. No water refill, no nothing. I like the resturant, but they need to do something about their service. more

The Difference 1/19/2003

Kashin consistently serves great sushi. Other sushi restaurants in the area seem to be hit or miss with the quality of the fish and even the rice. A good day at some other sushi place is everyday at Kashin. Pros: Good Service, Good Authentic Food, Relaxing Atmosphere Cons: strip mall location more

Best Sushi in the Triangle 1/14/2003

Best true Japanese food in the triangle, PERIOD. Excellent Sushi, cozy atmosphere. The attentive service is unparalelled among Japanese places. Most highly recommended. Pros: Great Food, Excellent Service more

The Best 12/21/2002

Kashin is by far the best sushi restaurant in the triangle. Plus, for non-sushi fans, the Udon noodles are terrific! If you're thinking of sushi, don't even entertain notions of the other places! Kashin rules! Pros: Terrific food, excellent atmosphere more

Sushi-riffic 12/11/2002

Really enjoyed the food here, sushi is nicely prepared. Restaurant is small which poses both pros and cons. Very intimate atmosphere, but a little bit too cramped. Overall, great place for sushi. Pros: Intimate Atmosphere, Personal Attention Cons: A bit crowded more

  • In Short
Japanese specialties like shabu-shabu and teriyaki are served along with the sushi and sashimi dishes, which come in a variety of combinations. The attentive staff seems always eager to answer questions and make substitutions--a desirable feature at a sushi bar. The combinations are pricier than most sushi bars at lunch, ranging from $9-$12. Their spider rolls--tempura-fried, soft-shell crab wrapped in nori (seaweed) with rice--are excellent.
