One of the ways to tell an "old" hardware store on Long Island is that they are located next to the tracks. Back in the "Olden Days" before the Long Island Expressway was built, hardware stores were located next to the tracks so that lumber and hardware could be delivered conveniently. Karp's is one of these, located nest to the tracks where Larkfield Rd intercepts the Port Jefferson line in East Northport.
Just being an old hardware store, however, does not make one a good hardware store. Too many have been absorbed into the chains like Ace. Karp's, however, has held out. You can still go into Karp's and buy a single screw in a small brown bag. You can still ask advice about how to repair a screen door. You still can be helped by a knowledgable hardware man, and not some minimum wage teenager in an orange vest.
It is my first choice for all my hardware needs.
