My wife took her car to Karlâs auto repair because of a broken timing belt. She was quoted $70 per hour to perform repairs.($85. Per hr posted). We thought it was great. We had talked to a couple of people that gave the shop decent references. $15. Per hr off shop rate at a professional auto repair shop should be a good deal .She was also allowed to make $100. per payday installments.
At the beginning everything seemed good. The repairs included replacing the timing belt and all wear parts involved with it. It also, in this case, included remove/replace the cylinder head, due to timing belt breaking while the engine was running. The work on the head was done at outside repair shop. While performing work it was noted exhaust manifold had crack. Which led to finding pre cat converter was shot.
We understand parts wear out and break. That's why the car was there to begin with.
Within a couple of days having the car back the timing belt broke again. Karlâs auto towed it the 8 or 10 blocks to their shop @ $25 per tow. My wife was informed that a crankshaft position sensor had come apart and had ripped the new timing belt. It was repaired at $361.54 the shop ate the belt and she had to pay for sensor and r&r.
the sensor is in the middle of the area they were working in to replace timing belt to begin with. can't help but wonder if that's a simple coincidence....i don't think so
The 1st time I looked under the hood ,I found loose bolt holding the cam sensor, a bracket loose at the back of the head that holds the wiring harness and a broken electrical connector.
The next time I looked I found the bolt that is supposed to hold the dipstick was there but not trough the dipstick tube.I was told they never touched the dipstick....again, coincidence ? how many are there?
Now the car has a knock that sounds like it's coming from the top end of the motor. I don't know what it is yet. I know enough to understand it may or may not have anything to do with the work performed...maybe it's just one more coincidence that it happens to be in the exact area they worked
The biggest issue I have is this IF ALL THIS SIMPLE STUFF THAT IS ABLE TO BE FOUND IN A TOTAL OF 10 MINUTES IS WRONG.............¦WHAT QUALITY OF WORK WAS DONE IN THE REST OF THE REPAIRS.
I tried to talk to the shop about sub par work at top shop prices. The reaction I got was they don't leave anything loose or apart. They we’re very adamant about the top quality of work done at shop.
I asked them to come the few blocks to our house to see the items left loose. Telling them also there was a knock in the car, and I didn’t want to drive it.
I was told there was no chance they did anything wrong
They insisted I am the only person to ever have problems with there quality of work. I was also told YOU GUYS DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND ANY MONEY. Fair enough business is business. I think we would get same quality of work
The rate actually charged was more than the $70. P hr agreed.
The price on 7 of the parts was billed at $875.42 the cost at popular parts store next to shop is $511. Over $350 markup on $511
That’s at my cost or yours simply walking in off the street. I would think they get a discount, don't know
My wife spent over $2500 at Karlâs not including cat converter and oxygen sensor. And we didn't want to spend any money.
They did sub par repairs, charged over 100% on parts, and refused to even consider the possibility of coming over to look at the things they left apart.
Welcome to America . I have been as fair as I can be writing this. It's hard to find a business with integrity . I hope they do well. We won't be doing business with them anytime soon.
Oh a last note My wife still owes around $ 600 she was allowed payments on the labor, that will be paid as agreed . She will fulfill her end of the deal.
