teaching self defense, self confidence, respect and fitness 9/5/2011

I enrolled my oldest child about a year and a half ago, and he has gained not only physical fitness, but a confidence and self assurance that is amazing. Now I have also enrolled my other 2 kids, and the variety of classes that are geared to spark interest in mulitple areas of martial arts, has made our karate evenings enjoyable for the entire family. They teach basic karate, sparring, weapons, and jujitsu for all ages. All classes are included in your membership and everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace. more

If all you're looking for a something to keep your kid busy and maybe learn some basic Martial Arts, then this is the place for you and your child. First let me start by stating that I have over 15 yrs of Martial Arts experience as student and as a Master Instructor. I spoke to Master Rose one on one and made it very clear that I do not want to be wasting my time if his school is a black belt assembly line. Meaning you pay your monthly dues and testing dues and you pass every test. He assured me they don't work that way. I go to my daughters 1st belt testing, and there are about 30 people testing. Mostly kids from 4-16 and a couple adults. Some testing for their 2nd belt others for Black Belt. Not one person could do a proper front stance, side kick, or back kick. One girl was testing for her blue or red belt and while doing her form, her cell phone fell out of her uniform onto the floor. The only form they had to do was the 1 form for their belt they were testing for, not all the forms they learned up to that belt like it should be. The 2 testing for black belt were horrible, they look like yellow belts. One was Master Rose's son, he couldn't even remember his form and had to start over twice. Of course he passed. I would have passed 1 maybe 2 students. As an instructor we are to not only give our students confidence in themselves, but also the ability to support that confidence. And this school does not do that. After the testing I spoke to Master Rose and asked if it's not important to practice good technique and his responds was ""I'm only concerned if they can preform the move that I ask them, not if it's preform correctly."" I never took my Daughter back and did not even bother picking up her belt or certificate, because it's not worth the paper it's printed on. So If you want your child to be a assembly line black belt and not concerned with technique or form, this is the school for you. But when you or your child is in a situation were you/they need to defend themselves and get the crap beat out of them don't say I didn't tell you so. Pros: have a babysitter for about an hour Cons: ev erything else more
