Editorial review from Citysearch 1/27/2013

We went to Kampai last night (my first time). At 6:30 on a Saturday, it was pretty empty, but it was fine since we had a pretty big group. They had us write our names on our sushi order sheets which helped them keep track of separate checks. They had some interesting specialty rolls that looked really good. My friend tried the Rebel Roll and really enjoyed it. I had their Rainbow Roll which was topped with very fresh sushi, and the spicy tuna roll. Prices are pretty average for sushi. I enjoyed it and am sure that I will be back. more

Can't get a California Roll Right!?! 10/19/2011

I think this place might have been sold to another owner. After reading a review online, we went for lunch expecting traditional Japanese food as the review stated. This place is DEFINITELY not traditional Japanese! I ordered the lunch bento and my husband the sushi lunch special and the California roll that came with my bento was awful. So fishy and too much mayo. I wanted to spit out the piece in my mouth but the waitress came by to check on us. I was praying that I would not get sick. The Teri Chicken was swimming in sauce and there was some veggie mixture that was soggy. The only thing good about this place was the lunch special prices. However, if you want authentic Japanese food head over to Mr Sushi which is not very far away. Worth the 2 min drive for sure! more

empty on friday nights 11/24/2007

I've had sushi here a few times, and it was just ok for the price. This is not the finest sushi you'll have in Dallas, but nothing to complain about for the decent price. The non-sushi entrees and appetizers on the menu, however? Horrible. Deep fried crab rangoon was fishy and greasy. Chicken Yakitori was almost inedible. The chicken was dry and flavorless, and the dipping sauce it came with tasted like it came out of a can. I was hoping the entree I ordered would erase the awful taste the appetizers left in my mouth, but it did not. Chicken katsu roll sounded delicious on the menu, with asparagus and carrots wrapped in chicken that was breaded and fried. The chicken once again resembled rubber, and it was utterly flavorless, even with the accompanying sauce and the vegatables. On the side was decent japanese cole slaw, but at this point, nothing could save this dinner. The non-sushi entrees were chinese buffet-quality, but the prices were four times what you'd pay at a buffet. I would skip this restaurant, and opt for something like Cafe Miso, which is just a few blocks away. more
