Our dog came home after spending two days at the animal walk, with what we thought was fleas. In fact, we saw a couple and continued with her frontline flea medicine. The scratching and licking of her rectal area did not stop. Our four year old child became very ill and was diganosed with rectal strep. When I returned home and noticed the dog licking...it clicked. I called Julington Creek Animal Hospital to ask if I could have her tested. The vet told me that he had never heard of it and there was nothing he could do. Said she probably needed the glands in her bottom expressed. I was able to find a vet who had heard of it and did do a swab. She did test positive for rectal strep. This can be transmitted to humans very easily...a dog licks itself, later licks a human hand, arm, or face and it gets spread. \r
When I called Julington Creek to inform them that she in face had this they were very indifferent and kept insisting that they have never heard of rectal strep. Scary.
