Johnnie's Beef

The food here is excellent and the Italian ice is just what you need in the balmy Chicago summers. I'd give this place 5 stars but the parking is ridiculously limited and the lines can get really long. I guess that's the price you pay for delicious food. more

The appeal of Johnnie’s is perplexing as it is undeniable. At any given point in time, this old-school fast-food shack will have: a) A gigantic line of customers streaming out of the building b) A line of cop cars parked out front on their lunch or dinner break c) An assembly of teens and/or twentysomethings socializing by their cars nearby d) All of the above Why is there such great demand for a place that—let’s face it—isn’t the prettiest eatery around? I’m not sure, but I can venture a good guess. What I do know is that Johnnie’s has excellent Italian beef and great Italian ice, and in an area with a good dose of Italian lineage, that’s a winning formula. Again, the Italian beef is arguably the best in the Chicago area. Johnnie’s is also unique in that it’s got a bit of Seinfeld-esque “Soup Nazi” thing going on, because when the line is long, you better know what you’re ordering and not hold up the line (both regulars and employees will give you evil looks for any unwarranted delays). I presume this efficient, direct service only adds to the place’s vintage appeal. If I had out-of-towners looking for the best Italian beef in Chicago, this is where I would take them. more

Johnnie's Beef is by far the best beef place in all of Chicago. Driving by, it looks like a small walk-in grill, but in the summer, the lines of people waiting go around the block. The Beef Combo, my favorite meal, is a nice heaping mound of beef and a grilled spicy sausage, accompanied with a side of fries. Top that with their famous Italian Ice, and you have the perfect meal for any day. The only drawback of Johnny's is that they take cash only, so remember to go to the ATM beforehand. more

Johnnie's Beef is my FAVORITE Italian beef shack. Yes, it is a shack with limited seating and long lines day in and day out, but it is worth it. Its Italian beef sandwiches are excellent - you can choose hot peppers or sweet peppers, but I would recommend the hot peppers even if you don't like spicy foods. To add more protein, you can also select the combo which comes with beef and a sausage. Meanwhile, its lemon ice is heaven with chunks of lemon blended inside. The ice is not too sweet nor too bland, but just right. Btw, Johnnie's only takes cash. more
