A Spicy Cuban Sandwich??? 12/19/2011

I'm Cuban. I've been eating and making Cuban sandwiches my whole life. They are NEVER spicy. Sort of like an Italian saying they've got a really great recipe for a meatless bolognese sauce. I'm sure the sandwich is good on its own but wish you'd call it something else 'cause it ain't a (true) Cuban sandwich. BTW...been to Jimmy's for their Italian products..cheeses, sausages, meats. Superb! more

The place to find authentic food products for all your Italian recipes 1/19/2009

We often pull out old recipes that are very specific concerning what pasta, prosciutto, cheese or sauce to be used. Jimmy's will have it. Most items in the grocery store, including the wine, are what we would buy in Italy at Despar; but be forewarned the prices are not.\r \r Order up a sandwich and let them make it while you shop,\r \r The staff is extremely knowledgeable. The entire feeling of the place is that of a small town grocer. Oh, and don't forget to try out the homemade sausage, or the premade pasta. Pros: The variety of items, quality, atmosphere. mostly imported items found at prices less exspenive than going to get them yourself. Cons: though the variety may be vast, the selection may not be. You do pay for what you want. Then again it's mostly imported. more

Great Place To Find Italian Market Finds 12/11/2008

Good selection of cheeses, wines and more. A little hard to get to and not open on Sundays, though. Pros: Great Italian Finds Cons: Not Open On Sundays more

Very nice grocery, but so-so sandwich shop. 9/6/2008

For years a friend has spoken highly of Jimmy?s Food Store sandwiches. D Magazine also touted the sandwiches, particularly the spicy Cuban sandwich. I finally went to Jimmy?s and ordered the Cuban. The woman at the sandwich counter asked if I wanted hot sauce with it. ?The hotter the better? I said. What I got, after a long wait, was the Caprese sandwich, a cold, bland concoction of tomato, basil, and mozzarella. I took the sandwich back to the counter and said I ordered a Cuban sandwich. I was met with blank looks from everyone behind the sandwich counter. Not wanting to wait another 15 minutes for the sandwich I ordered and risk incurring the wrath of the sandwich maker, I ate the Caprese sandwich. It was a far cry from the hot and spicy Cuban sandwich I had heard so much about and was looking forward to eating. Disappointing! Pros: Nice selection of meats and imported goods. Cons: Service and parking. more

Best Italian grocery 7/10/2008

Jimmy's is one of the biggest reasons I miss Dallas. Yeah, the sandwiches are incredible, but if you like to cook, this place is just amazing! The italian sausage is great, broken up into a pomodoro sauce or lasagna, or just thrown onto the grill in the casing. Lots of different prosciutto, and a huge selection of cheeses. A very nice bottled wine selection, and if you don't see what you want, they have been known to order it for you. I don't know too many people who would travel for different types of imported olives, but yeah, they've got those too. Don't look for too many domestic products, a good chunk of it crossed the Atlantic to get here. \r Pros: Momma's Meatballs (the reason this place started) , best Italian grocery in Dallas Cons: Too far from home.. I live out of state now more

Great sandwiches, great groceries... you will want to live near Jimmy's 12/8/2007

I read about Jimmy's Cuban sandwiches a year or two ago in a ""best of"" article in D magazine. Unfortunately since we live in the northern suburbs, BFE in relation to Dallas, we were never in the neighborhood early enough for sandwiches at Jimmy's, until today.\r \r Sandwiches are made until 7:00 pm. I had the Cuban (yes, with the hot sauce) , because I had been coveting it for about two years. It was delicious and spicy, and I wrapped part of it back up in its foil wrap to take home to the far northern suburbs because it was really big. My husband had an Italian sausage sandwich which looked to die for with peppers piled on. Next time (and there WILL be a next time), I will have that Caprese sandwich.\r \r It takes a while for them to make the sandwiches, so be sure to browse the beverages. I had a bottled coffee or maybe it was an espresso soda... it wasn't a diet drink. It was really tasty though. And there are a lot of other drinks I would be happy to try. One can buy a shot of freshly brewed espresso for $1 or a double for $2.\r \r It's an awesome place with so many great things to try and buy... wine, soft drinks, meats, pastas, locally made ice creams, etc. Plus you can sit down and enjoy everything right there in the store.\r \r They also sell produce like onions and whatnot, for reasonable prices.\r \r Seriously, I wish I lived by Jimmy's Food Store. Pros: Lots of great products, and good prices on many items Cons: Long wait for orders more

Best Italian Food In Dallas!! 7/3/2007

There is no place like Jimmy's - it is simply the best there is! Awesome Italian sandwiches and they are even experts at making Cuban sandwiches. The ""My Sisters"" desert line is fantastic, especially the fig cookies and Italian Cream cake. Great meatballs and sausage - if you have never been there all I can say is GO!!! Pros: Great food, autentic atmosphere more

I dream about this place! 10/14/2006

Jimmy's is the kind of small Italian grocery store that is very rare in Dallas. Fabulous sausage, meatballs, cheeses, salami, wines.....and a cuban sandwich that I am obsessed with. Besides that, a very reasonably priced produce section. Charming, unique and fabulous. Pros: love it! more
