Truckee's BEST SUSHI! 5/12/2010

Under the new management, the restaurant is better than ever! The rolls are awesome, the decor is cozy! Great place for a first date (it won't be your last!) How can you resist ""Hand Grenades"" (flavor EXPLODES! in your mouth) or ""Steady Eddie's Wild Ride,"" or the ""Saturday NIght Special""? (No, it's not a gun, just a killer roll!) The EJ sauce is addictive! I love the owner and all of the chefs and staff, who work hard to personalize your visit! I wear my Java Sushi tee to advertise for them! If you want REALLY delicious and exotic flavors in your sushi, come here. You will come back every week! Pros: So good you have to wait! Cons: So good you have to wait! more

Best Sushi in Tahoe....or maybe anywhere! 11/3/2008

I have eaten sushi all across the country, and since I've moved to Tahoe, I'm stoked to have a place like Java Sushi so close. The quality of their fish is by far the best in the Tahoe area (including the flashy new sushi bars opening that seem to have forgotten that sushi is about the fish and not the seventeen sauces and toppings.) The chefs and waitstaff are friendly and knowledgeable about their product, and the atmosphere is like a never-ending party. The service was impressive, with two waitresses weaving around the small restaurant making eye contact and smiling at every patron. One waitress who is there almost nightly remembers us by name AND our usual pre-dinner drinks! The rolls were unbelievable with combinations I've never seen before. Their menu is huge, almost fifty rolls, but if you ask your chef or server for something special, they are always happy to pull out something outrageous and delicious! They rock nightly specials and happy hour discounts, and although they definitely aren't ""fast food,"" their quality supercedes the speed. Ryo, one of the chefs, told us at dinner that if they wouldn't serve the fish to their own mother, they wouldn't serve it to us. That's all we needed to hear! For a unique and totally fun experience, be sure to stop into Java Sushi! Pros: Amazing fish, friendly service, great atmosphere Cons: Small size, slow-ish service more

SLOW SLOW SLOW and uh SLOW 8/30/2007

I have been a Truckee local for 15 years and seen Java Sushi change ownership many times. At first, the quality was a bit of an issue. That was many years ago. Now the main problem is they can't to make a hand roll in less than 10 minutes. ITS A HAND ROLL, it really shouldn't take long. Nigiri Sushi, its a slice of fish on top of a clump of rice and yet it takes 5-10, no matter how busy or not busy they are. I have been the only one there and it was still INCREDIBLY slow. You get the 1 hour all you can eat and it is really a 1 hour, as little as they can possible make. I honestly think it must be part of there business plan. I think they need to realise they could be open 7 days a week for lunch if they had quick service, and make their money on volume. The only nice thing I have to say is the quality is very good, if you have a COUPLE HOURS ! Pros: GOOD QUALITY Cons: Need 4 hours to get full, and then you already digested the first bites more

Why the haterade? 5/9/2007

I can't say I agree with the previous reviews. I'm not a local, but a sometime visitor to the Truckee area: on a previous trip a few years ago, I did indeed have a less-than-stellar experience, but I decided, seeing that the place is still in business to give it another try. The sushi chefs told me that Java had recently come under new mangement and I thought it showed - they were friendly and helpful and made me the best vegetarian rolls I've ever had, and I've eaten sushi in many, many places across the globe. They were inventive and fresh and didn't limit my options to a choice of avocado, cucumber, or both. I don't go in all the time, and it was fairly quiet the night I was there, but I would eat there again gladly. Pros: Great fresh sushi - especially the vegetarian rolls! Cons: Small more

Awful everything!! 3/9/2007

Each time I go to Java I keep hoping that someone has figured out how to run that business, but each time I'm disappointed. This was the last time. The service is horrible (unless you like it when your waitress is smacking gum in your face the one and only time she makes it around to you). The chefs are SSSSLLOOOWW!!! After an hour of all-you-can-eat each person in my group of three only had 3 or 4 servings. The rolls are nothing special and definitely not worth the prices they're charging. There is no room to breathe in this place when it's full. It's a very small, cramped space. Take some advice and go somewhere else... ANYWHERE else. Trust me... if you decide to eat here you'll be angry that you did. Pros: No such thing here. Cons: That this place continues to make money. more

WORST service EVER! 2/22/2006

I have been going to Java Sushi for many years since I live in Truckee. The fish is great but the service is the worst I have ever seen. Last night I tried it one more time but now I know I won't ever return there. I walked in the door and no one greeted me for 10 minutes! Then once we got a seat at the bar, we sat for 25 minutes and weren't even acknowledged by the sushi chef. I have experienced this many times before but keep hoping that it will change. I know it recently changed ownership but the service still goes down hill! more
