The service here is so polite -- it's such a refreshing change from most places. The store is small, but it is so neat and clean. They serve small sandwiches and miscellaneous things, but the pastries are the main reason to come here. Melon Pan seems like such a plan and simple thing, but it is just delicious. The fruity cakes are divine. Everything here is good, and the prices are very fair. You can usually get a bag of day old things for a very good price. In recent years they have expanded their selection of imported Japanese foods (cookies and the like). This place is a rare treat. They also have a stand in the Porter Exchange in Cambridge. more

Best Asian Bakery in Boston 8/16/2005

Technically, Japonaise Bakery is located in Brookline, about a block from the Brookline/Boston border, but that doesn't affect its status as one of the best bakeries and hidden gems in the area. Goods are prepared fresh daily, with offerings that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in town. The thick slices of their loaves of bread come out near-perfect every time, regardless if you choose wheat, light cream, or heavy cream. Their individual pastries please both the palette and the eyes. Onigiri, or rice balls in seaweed, are a delicious reminder of sushi but without the raw fish. Cakes are to die for; ranging from banana chocolate mousse to green tea. Prices are reasonable for the unique fare that this bakery brings to the table. more
