Best Sushi in Columbus 10/28/2010

I have been eating here for years now and I have never had problems with parking. Parking on campus can sometimes be pretty tricky though, you should be more careful where you park but I have ate at multiple sushi bars around Columbus as well as sushi bars across the country. Japanese Oriental has hands down the best spicy tuna roll. Also, with the addition of great tasting entree dishes, this restaurant does it all. I highly suggest, if you live around campus or if you're just in town for the game or whatnot, to give this place a try and I guarantee you will not regret it. more

Watch your car! 10/25/2010

I ate at this restaurant over the weekend and was towed from the parking lot behind the restaurant. The signs back there make it look like you can park for the restaurant but apparently you can't. I talked to the restaurant manager about this and suggested they put up a sign warning people. She did not seem to care. Since I have out of state plates, I'm guessing this is a scam and they get a kickback from the tow company. Also, the food is mediocre. It is definitely NOT worth a visit. more

The boss lady is very rude 5/18/2010

I have been going to this restaurant for many time the food is great but the last couple of time is going down hill service is not that great either. When I pay my bill the boss lady come back and told me I have to give at lease 15% tip, after we just spend about $100 worth of food in the restaurant. she just stand at our table till we give her the money I think that is not right at all, plus only 3 of us only not like a freaking party. If your worker want a good tip should give a better service to customer. more

Delicious food, great variety!! 2/7/2010

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Myself and two friends, (ages 19, 19, and 27) have decided we're going to go out to eat somewhere different every week, a different country if we can. We've had a couple misses, but this place was definitely a hit! This is the first time I had sushi, and I was a little apprehensive but determined to keep an open mind and have no expectations. My friends and I all ordered different things, and split a spider roll and dumplings as appetizers. We always eat off each others' plates when we go somewhere new, and we were pleasantly surprised when the servers set down our orders and then proceeded to fill every available space on the table with a tiny serving dish containing a sampling of several different items. At first we assumed it was the side to one of our dishes, and when we asked who's it was, were told that it was for all of us. Awesome! I'm still really pleased about that. So I got to try a little of everything, and other than something called a sea mushroom, which had the texture of a trashbag, everything was SO GOOD!! They serve Japanese, Korean, and Chinese fare, so you get a lot of variety and a lot of choices. The only thing that was minorly - very minor - disappointing was that they didn't ask us if it was our first time and didn't really take any time to educate us. Thus, we were left to figure things out. (It's a personal belief of mine that if you have a niche business, you should always ask visitors if they are familiar with things.) However, the menu is very descriptive, and colorful pictures accompany many of the dishes. Oh, and it's a 10-page menu. May have been 12, I didn't count. Also, the prices were great. We had two appetizers, an entree each, and we chose the pricier options, some of their choices are as little as $4 - and all those little samples, for which I didn't see an extra charge, and it all came to $52 and some change for three people. Less than you'd pay at Applebees, and WAY better. Pros: Everything tasted great, and the prices were fair. Cons: They could have done a little more explaining. more

Best Sushi on Campus 1/14/2009

Hidden like a diamond in the rough, Japanese Oriental is a great experience. Service is slow but courteous, atmosphere is relaxed, and the food is phenomenal. I usually go for nigiri, but I also love the spider roll, spicy tuna roll, and amigo roll. The salmon and unagi nigiri are fantastic! Pros: Great foor for the price Cons: service can be slow on busy days more

Best Sushi in Central Ohio 10/28/2008

Listen I have been around the block and I know good sushi when I see smell it taste it. This place consistently has the best product around. Fresh ingredients veteran chefs. Amazing! I will go out of my way to eat there. The service is hot and cold which is typical of really good sushi restaurants. I have a motto to live by ...if you go into a sushi restaurant and the service is good or great then leave because the sushi SUX. I have my theories as to why but they are not important. It does however adds to the flavor of the place. I love it and will take beginner novice and expert sushi eater there any day Pros: you may have to hop a plane to find better sushi Cons: Service is weak...small price to pay however more

Amazing food! 6/11/2008

I hadn't been here for many years and ended up going back fairly recently. Pros: Great atmosphere, fantastic food, great service Cons: Parking (but only if you mind walking - I don't!) more

Columbus' Hidden Sushi 8/23/2006

With all of the higher end/higher priced sushi places in Columbus (e.g. Haiku, Kooma, Tyfoon, Shoku, Asian Gourmet), Japanese Oriental is an unlikely diamond in the rough. The spider roll, spicy tuna and even fav's like Boston or Alaskan rolls are satisfiers among any who enjoy sushi - and you'll be satisfied even with the heartier portions at the same prices as those sushi joints listed above. You won't get the young progressive crowd here or the martinis and mojitos, but the ambiance is great for a date or even a casual get-together with one or two friends - larger parties may have to wait, but if you're looking for authentic korean dishes along with a side or course of sushi, this is the place to try! more

service extremely slow 12/12/2005

The food is not bad but the service is way under standard. It is so slow that I need to spend 25-30 mins waiting for a lunch box. And it is very difficult to get the waiter or waitress's attention for things as simply as a napkin or refill of water. Go if you have time to waste. By the way, the palce is so small and crowded, and air is not fresh and makes people dizzy. more

Don't Believe the Name! But Still Go! 5/12/2004

A couple of sushi and noodle dishes does not make a restaurant Japanese. However, the menu features a wide variety of excellent dishes that are primarily Korean in character, but fused with some other oriental styles. Its rather well-priced, as well. Weve always been seated promptly, and the servers have always been professional and friendly. Pros: Value, Food, Service Cons: , Sushi isn't Stunning more

More Korean than Japanese 11/10/2003

I had an enjoyable experience but there was nothing really Japanese about my visit. The menu did offer sushi but the rest of the Korean patrons didn't really order any. Pros: Authentic Korean Food Cons: Not Japanese more

Not bad but not Japanese 6/23/2003

I would considered this place more Korean than Japanese. They do have a sushi bar and the sushi there is alright but I usually go there for the Korean dishes. One warning, the service is slow. Pros: Great Korean Food Cons: Service more

Looking for better 11/21/2002

First thing, I am not comparing this resturant to any particular sushi bar in Columbus. But I am comparing it to the many sushi bars around Ohio. (One particually in Dayton, Kai cafe) Anyway, the portions are small, very very thin slices. And the Rolls are very squished. The service is not very good, being that they sometimes ""forget"" to even come to the table. The service is also not helpful to those who might acquire assitance in ordering Sushi. One of the nice things, of course, is that the food and service is authentic. One last thing that comes to question is that most of the people and food there are Korean, not Japanese, which would make one wonder why they call it ""Japanese Oriental Restaurant"" and not a Korean Restaurant. Pros: Authentic, Good Parking, quaint and "cozy" Cons: Bad Service, Ridged Menu, small portions more
