Just visiting G'boro for business conference. Told my wife we could eat at Ruby Tuesday's at home (it's next door to Jake's). Let's try something different. Jake's is an old fashioned diner. The music was '50s & '60s. No frills. No attempt at decor. No fancy salad bar. Just the basics. We each tried a steak. Cooked just like we like them. Their butcher knows how to cut the steaks, too. They were very tender, not 'chewey' like some inexpensive steaks. The broccoli casserole was exactly what one would expect: slightly overcooked broccoli with lots of good flavor and topped with lots of the same cheese they put on the burgers. Black-eyed peas were perfect! Bread was grilled burger buns--and it was much tastier than conventional 'dinner rolls' one usually finds in a diner like this. This is not 'gourmet' but it's really very good food. I want to go back and try the Reuben. Service was good, too. Friendly waitress who kept my glass filled with good sweet tea.
