J.R. Koontz Flowers has been a Wichita fixture since 1974. In more than 32years the business has grown through outstanding service, design and merchandising.

A native Wichitan, J.R. Koontz graduated from Wichita schools and attended Wichita state University from 1963 to 1969. He is married to April, who is active in the business, and together they had three children.


While attending college, J.R. worked in an area flower shop to help finance his education and soon became a principal designer. His plans to own his own business culminated in April 1974, when J.R. Koontz Flowers was opened in the Kiva (lower level) of the former Holiday Inn Plaza-Garvey Center. During the thirteen years at this location, J.R. built his business to gain the reputation as the area?s leading floral designer and floral retailer. This was in spite of the fact that his business was located on the interior basement level with no public exposure and limited parking. J.R. Koontz Flowers was at, 155 N. Market, for the past sixteen (16) years He has continued to grow his business and reputation, and is widely acknowledged as the premier quality floral retailer of the Midwest

Over the past forty (40) years, J.R. has established him self as one of the nation?s top floral designers from the industry. He has earned prestigious qualified designer recognition from the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), which has a selective membership of approximately 900 designers worldwide.
