The Scene
Was Isabel Designs recently and harshly struck with Hinduism? Many of the boutique's clothes feature a patch exclaiming "We need more Gandhis now!" This is the motif of the shop and the essence of its owner's fashion vision: freedom of speech, spiritual growth and intense individuality.
The Selection
Isabel carries the owner's own manufactured line (the Gandhi-patched apparel, for example), clothes by other up-and-coming local designers and vintage items. The store is highlighted by its intellectually bright designs, particularly the "deconstruction" of vintage clothing. Deconstruction is the art of taking old, say, pairs of Calvins, dismantling them, then putting them back together in a fashionable, trendy style. This may or may not include airbrushing.
Stay for the Politics
Visitors may be more satisfied with owner Isabel's beliefs than her business--the selection isn't overwhelming. But the store's unforgettable ambience (and Isabel's fashion vision) should rally a strong following.
