Everyone always raves about Hyman's--I don't get it. Charleston is teeming with fantastic seafood restaurants, yet people are eight deep on a Friday at 6pm waiting to get a table ...

Horrible and bogus - Avoid it at all costs 8/31/2010

I can't call this place a tourist trap because it didn't trap a lot of tourists. They have ""reviews"" posted in their windows w/out dates. That means the reviews are old and obsolete. The place looked like a dive - funky, superficial with many celebrity photos. The hushpuppies were good and they passed them out on street corners to get customers. If the food was good, they wouldn't need this gimmick. We had a small party. One person got through the entire meal without problems. The rest of us sent back our food twice. It was raw and gritty. The waitress was beyond annoying and intrusive. The manager did walk around making sure everyone was okay. He had to walk around because the food was so awful. He had the audacity to give us stickers to wear with the chance of our winning something free (and doing free advertising for them). We refused to wear it. We got coupons for free appetizers due to the failed meals. I did not and would not go back because the food was so raw, undercooked, ill prepared, and the waitress needed lessons... Do not go there or go there at your own risk. more

Total Tourist Trap-Listen to the Locals-they know 4/24/2010

This place is such a joke to most Locals in Charleston. They trick you with the line by not letting anyone wait 'inside' , so a line forms on the outside, giving the illusion that it is really busy and making passerbys think it must be good to have such a long line. Pros: Hush Puppies, Large portions Cons: Poor food, usually overcooked, served cold, poor service more

My husband, 3 year old daughter, and 1 year old daughter ate at Hyman's for the first time today after 7 years of visiting Charleston annually. Pros: food, service, personal attention Cons: Tables are particularly small- gets crowded with dishes and hard if you have a baby/toddler who is still grabby more

Anyone can start a campaign to stuff ballot boxes and that's the only way most of the locals I know can figure out that they'd be voted Number One for anything, but litter caused by their handbills and stickers they give to diners, (who leave them on benches and lampposts all over defacing our beautiful public spaces). Worst seafood in Charleston 12/24/2008

Perhaps one of the worst restuarants in the Charleston if not the country. The food is not freash and in some cases down right spoiled. The seafood is not kept on ice and I am surprised most people do not get sick.. If you value your health stay away. more

Misconceptions of Hymans, 12/9/2008

I had been coming to Charleston on business 2 years in a row and had never visited because of the Humongous line outside each time. I had always been told they are good for seafood but also had some bad reviews from friends.Well, some colleagues were all going there so I decided to do the wait thing with them. Wanting to be non-biased I decided before entering that I'd order all seafood and items that were not breaded (cuz anyone can stick flour on it and fry it) and preferrabley broiled or sauteed. Nice atmosphere 11/20/2008

Our time at Hyman's was a good one. They are moderate to high priced on their food. The food was good and the wait staff was professional and helpful. When we notified our waiter of a food alergy he immediately consulted the kitchen staff. We were informed one item we ordered was ok to eat by the kitchen staff only to discover we were misinformed. Once our waiter was notified of the mistake, the manager came immediately to apologize and the item was removed from the bill. We had a great time and would eat their again. Wonderful 7/27/2008

Hyman's is wonderful. We recently travelled to Charleston for our honeymoon. Several locals recommended Hyman's she-crab soup, so we went there. Wow! It was among the best chowder of my life! Simple, yet rich and satisfying. Great portions! Scallops were cooked perfectly. The sauce and fried grits gave it that signature southern taste. The staff and owner were very personable. A must for eating in Charleston. I WOULD GLADLY GO BACK THERE! Pros: delicious food, great service Cons: long wait-go early, no parking more
