Uptight people need not attend. 5/17/2009

I live locally to Howl at the Moon, and I prefer this place to a lot of local bars. Reason? The cover charge, and the parking. Yes, it's $10 to park at City Walk; Yes there is a cover charge, but given the rent of the place, what do you expect? I prefer to go there for the simple fact that it keeps certain unsavory elements out. The music is loud, the musicians get the crowd going and have a blast doing it. Yeah, they can't sing all the notes in every song, but it's fun, it's live, and I doubt you could do much better. Bouncers - I keep reading about the 'rude' doormen and bouncers. Give me a break, you expect everyone to be smiling and happy all the time? These guys are not there to make you feel warm and fuzzy, they are there to make sure that you are safe, and obeying the rules *of which there are a few* so that other people are safe as well. You complain about them being a bit short with you, but what if they weren’t herding people around, and something bad went down? Then what? Complain that they didn’t keep people in control? And no, at a bar, you can’t be the nice bouncer and still expect the drunk ***holes to respect you and not give you a problem. Wait staff - Yes you are a patron, yes you are buying drinks. Guess what, so are about 90 other people pressed up against the bar. Yes you’re going to tip, but tell me the truth, would you be inclined to kowtow to everyone who was tantalizing you with a whole $1 tip? If you don’t know what you want when you get up to the bar, the bartender is going to move on to someone who does. Do not expect them to sit there on a packed night and babysit you while you choose between the Fuzzy Navel and the Apple Pucker. He/she is going to leave, take care of another patron while you make up your mind so they keep the line moving. Everyone wants alcohol, and it won’t be pretty if everyone is waiting on you to decide what libation will tickle your fancy. You want better service, tip well, get the bartenders name and go back to him/her all the time. They are here to make money, and if you’re tipping well, they’ll make sure you’re happy. A $1 tip on a $6 beer is not tipping well, even on 3 for 1 Sundays. Scale accordingly. Lack of Food – Wait, what?! You want food and drinks, go to Karl Strauss across the way. Good food, good beers. There are a ton of restaurants on City Walk that will be more than happy to feed you, and provide you with a limited selection of alcohol. Heck, TGIF would do just fine for that as well. Howl at the Moon is a watering hole. WATERING HOLE! Don’t know what that is? Look it up. You go to Howl to get drinks, hear music, get buzzed *or some variation thereof* and hang out with friends. Perhaps make a few new ones, just do us all a favor and leave the high and mighty attitude at your car, remove the stick from your lower orifice, and guys…don’t think that every woman coming in the door is craving your attention. Chances are you’re not that interesting, she’s not that stupid, and there isn’t enough alcohol in the bar. Get it? Got it? Good. In summation, go there to have fun, go there to have drinks, go there to relax and bring your manners. If you’re wanting to make the scene, not the place for you. If you want to be treated like a celebrity, SOOO not the place for you. If you want someone to cater to your every whim, go to your mother’s house. Chances are she’ll look at you like you’ve grown a second head if you try and come at her with some arrogant demands, and she’ll put you in your place. Ciao Pros: Friendly wait staff, decent bar, drink specials. Cons: Overly agressive patrons who want to be discovered. more

Not Impressed! 5/10/2009

Its a decent chill spot, the live band is probably the only good thing about the place. I was a little disappointed they don't serve any food. Either way, its an ok spot nothing special. Definitely not a place I'll frequent much unless forced to do so. Pros: Hefeweizen!!! more

Horrible!! 7/13/2008

I've been a few times, and each time I hate it more and more.... The concept is great, dueling pianos and live band.... But its very expensive, filled with valley trash, and worst of all, the staff is horrible. They are all very rude and disrespectful. They are mindless drones. They will push you out of the way, don't listen to you.. They treat everyone with disrespect.... I understand that they deal with drunks all night, but its annoying for those who just want to go out and have a good time to be treated that way.... I'm going out and paying for a service and an experience. I'll take my money elsewhere, where people understand the concept of SERVICE INDUSTRY! Pros: Entertainment on stage is good Cons: Service staff is horrible more

Fun & Silly 10/1/2007

This is probably my favorite bar ever. The dueling pianos are always entertaining and the servers are pretty nice. I love to get the jello shots which are served in giant souvenir plastic syringes. The servers then shoot them into your mouth and top it off with whipped cream. I won a party there once and I brought sixty people. The bar gave my entire party free entrance, free parking, and highly discounted drinks. It can get a little crowded on the weekends, but it is still a lot of fun. Pros: great entertainment and jello shots Cons: can get crowded on the weekends more

Cheap fun for 3 day weekends!! 9/16/2007

It's a nice place if your looking for a fun time minus all the trouble of getting ready for a club. I have made it a ritual to go on sundays, during three day weekends, where I can get 3 drinks for about 15 bucks, including tips. It's pretty fun since the pianist will include all types of music from beastie boys, to nelly, to journey, even Vicente Fernandez!!! It does get pretty crowded though, so plan on arriving around 9 or so... anytime after that and you will have to wait at least 30 min, if not more. Another con, for some reason the last time I went the cover charge went from $3 to $10... in one night. Pros: Laidback atmosphere, cheap drinks on Sun. Cons: Very crowded more

Fun and Entertaining! 6/25/2007

Howl at the Moon is a blast! From the live music entertainment to the singing & dancing bartenders and servers you don't know where to look when! While they do charge a cover on the weekends after a certain hour, they are providing entertainment the entire time. No breaks or downtime as the pianists rotate. Parking can be pricey at CityWalk, but its worth the money!! Tony Romas will even deliver food to you while you're at Howl at the Moon! The outside patio allows you to have a little more ability to chat, but still hear and be part of the live show! Pros: Drinks, entertainment, meet new people! They have an outside patio as well. Cons: Loud and not easy to talk. more

good times 6/21/2007

i love the band they're always entertaining. bartenders are cool. there was a mix up and they thought i had a happy hour party and not a birthday party so i didn't get a stage call down, song request, birthday shot or shirt. so i was/am unhappy. i don't think i will throw parties there anymore. not sure if i will go back. more

Dueling pianos! 11/12/2006

Maybe it was the night I was here, but the crowd seemed to hover around the barely-21 age range. Mostly college kids and a bit on the immature-roudy side. On a positive note, their beer selection was decent and the dueling pianos were fun. I'd be curious to come back for open-mic night. more

excellent live band karaoke/open mic night, very friendly hosts 10/19/2006

excellent open mic night /live band karaoke! the band players are really fun and friendly. they would help you out if you wanna sing on stage with them. Pros: live band/open mic, friendly band, good service Cons: perhaps the fact that people are not aware of the karaoke nights more

Sing your lungs out 9/18/2006

This is a great place if you are looking to have a few drinks and sing out loud no matter who is around you. Make sure to tip the piano guys-- they will sing just about anything and make you feel silly in front of your friends. Its rather small so get there early for a table. more

NOT WORTH YOUR TIME 8/31/2005

Who charges a cover anymore? That is the first sign. They charge you to walk in the door, and once your in you realize that the bar is full of unattractive drunks who are trying to out sing two piano players. If you can find a place to sit down (good luck) you then have to find a server to get you a very expensive drink. I would not go here in hopes of meeting someone, because you can not talk at all over the annoying drunk people who now think that they can sing well. There are so many other places to choose from, I wouldn't waste my time going here. Cons: CROWDED, CUSTOMER SERVICE, SEATING more

The Best Around 4/12/2004

For those who don't like it here, it's because you don't like dueling piano bars. The best piano players, and they can actually sing. If you get there early it's much better, you get to see and get drunk with everyone as opposed to trying to catch up. Just make sure to request the good stuff and keep the party going. Pros: Piano player talent, party crowd, Location Cons: , expensive drinks more

Get ready for a great night! 7/26/2003

I have been here about six times, and have always had a great time. I would recomend this place for anyone who wants to spend a few hours screaming along with the musicians and laughing histerically at there renditions of a variety of songs. They only serve appetizers so get your dinner elsewhere before you go. Some people think it is expensive for the drinks but they are no where near the cost of a bar up on sunset. Plus you get great free entertainment. Sometimes it can be crowded but it changes since most people are from out of town. never to bad though!! Pros: Atmosphere, Location, Service Cons: No dinner more

This place is great 12/10/2002

We have a great time everytime we go here. But it is crowded, so get there early to get a table on the floor section. The other sections with tables are almost too far away to be in on the action. It is good for a big group of people, but I have had fun with just 1 or 2 also. Pros: Entertaining, Audience Partcipation, Good for Birthdays Cons: Crowded, Can be Pricey, Pay for Parking more

ok- not all that 7/28/2002

It was ok, but I had a better time next door at the Dance Place - um the Rumba Place. I guess you need to be with a huge party. Because everyone at Howl was drunk and you really can't move. At least you could dance and there were different rooms at the Rumba. Overall it was OK but you can't really go alone Pros: the Club Next door, Jello Shots, Club next door Cons: too crowded, small place more

Fun but very expensive 6/26/2002

This place is really good... the dualing piano band is very entertaining ...the pretty waitresses serve jello shots... only downfall.. way expensive more

nothing special 6/3/2002

I don't like piano duos, but my mate and I tried it out. The guys can sing and are some what funny. Service was fine, ok selection of beer. Just some place else to check out on Citywalk. Cons: expensive parking more

  • In Short
The decor is as American and desirable as a Big Mac, with a modernized version of a bar from "Bonanza." As expected, the barstools, tables, railings, stage and just about everything else is made out of wood. The classic rock and Top 40 hits the pianists play are loud and obnoxious but fun if you can appreciate a John Cougar Mellencamp ditty and Jeff Foxworthy-ish humor. The staff will randomly join in on the songs by taking the stage or hopping on the counters.
