Growing up with dogs, I have wanted a dog for a very long time, and for my birthday last year, my wish came true! As we headed to the SPCA, I had a general idea of what kind of dog I wanted - a medium-sized, female, adult dog, that didn't shed (too much). We arrived and signed in at the front desk, filling out a form, so we could visit one-on-one with the dogs. After walking around the entire facility (dogs are broken up into small/medium, and the larger dogs are in a separate area), there was only one dog I wanted to spend time with. Unbelievably, she was everything we wanted in a dog, AND she had already had a lot of obedience training - bonus! We weren't quite sure if we wanted to make a life-changing commitment that night, so we came back and visited her the next 2 nights before officially adopting her. A year later, and I can’t even imagine life without her!
The SPCA staff was very helpful and made our adoption process go very smoothly and gave us information about her medical history, the first (required within a certain amount of time) vet visit, all the classes available (at a discounted rate, since we adopted there). We attended the very educational (and free) new dog owners class later that week. And even though our girl wasn't quite a puppy, we attended the suggested Saturday afternoon puppy socialization class ($10) a couple of times, where the dogs get to play, and learn some training at the same time. All of the classes are also available to any dog owner, whether they adopted there or not. Overall, I was very impressed with the modern facilities, the knowledgeable staff, the number and types of classes offered, and the fact that we were able to provide a “forever home” for our sweet girl.
Pros: nice staff, organized, cute animals
