This is NOT, repeat NOT good Southern style eating! 7/27/2008

LindaRouse Provided by Partner
The food here is terrible. Yes, I said awful. It's not good even if you call it Southern or Soul or whatever. I may not be Cajun (that's a displaced Acadian from Nova Scotia who ended up in Louisiana), but I am a New Orleans native and Southern cook. Don't waste your money on the grub, baby. . . but, hey the shows are great, and thee gospel be rockin'. (I meant to write that, so simmer down.) Pros: I feel like I'm at Aunt Tizzy's house fixing' to eat fried chicken on a Sunday afternoon! Cons: Aunt Tizzy must have gotten into the sherry, 'cause the chicken was a stinker. more

i wouldn't go here just for the food. in fact, i'm not sure you can! i think you have to have a ticket to the show. but ... if you are seeing a show and you are hungry, this is not a bad option. just be advised you can't see the stage from the eating area. prices are a little high for quality but this is HOB. full bar. servers are pretty hurried on busy nights. parking is crazy expensive. Pros: convenient for shows Cons: food mediocre more

Great gospel, nothing else 4/4/2007

Totally the most overrated "LA experience." Here's why: buffet features super-long lines, crowded little picnic chairs at the family-style tables (most tables aren't private), they practically shut down the buffet once the music starts, not giving you much time to really enjoy your food unless you go really early. The 40 dollars must be strictly for the concert, because the food is NOT on that level, and any alchohol must be paid separately for 10 bucks all you can drink. The gospel musicians encourage the crowd to basically stop eating so you can wave and clap and sing and dance, which is great, if you are there to praise the Lord, but not if you didn't get a chance to eat or drink your money's worth. I'm not a devout Christian or nothing, but there's also something slightly weird (in a bad way) about mixing mimosas and buffet-style eating with songs of spirituality, deep emotion, and praise. Real conflict of interest vibes for me. My advice is go see a gospel concert somewhere more comfortable after eating a really nice buffet elsewhere. Or go to a Baptist church or something. Pros: Quality music Cons: Food and buffet setup not great more

The atmosphere at this place is just great...the food is not the best but they have great choices for a chill, hangout place....not too expensive either...and if you are lucky, there might be a band performing so you can hear some great music when hanging out with friends....and you catch the Sunset scene as well Pros: ambience more

Best place to see a show on Sunset Blvd. 8/13/2006

I've been to this joint for countless amount of times with countless amount of friends and the experiences was always amazing, from the start even being outside, to the great food, drinks, people you meet and all the way to the show. I was once invited up to the 'Foundation Room' (courtesy of Capital Records) a few years ago and the place was like a hipped out psychedelic room, very private and very reserved with food and you can mingle casually. Meanwhile on the main floor, it gets really really packed before the main event starts, so relax if you don't want to see the opening acts, chill with some drinks and eat all you can because the southern food here's just fantastic. more

House of Blues is good! 8/30/2005

I've been to the House of Blues a bunch and think that the food is really good. It's comfort food, so if you are looking for fine dining, go somewhere else. This is southern style food liek jambalaya and ribs and chicken. We always hit the restaurant before a show to fill our belly before we start drinking, plus you get into the show ahead of the line outside which is cool. Last week I tried the Fried Shrimp and Grits before the John Legend show and it was a good night all around....totally recommend for a fun night out. more

Believe the reviews! McDonalds has better service 8/7/2005

I have been to the HOB restaurant in New Orleans several times and all experiences were great (food, service, etc...). We went to HOB Sunset Strip "The Porch" restaurant before a show (which they advertise so you can "get in early") and it was an awful experience. The waiter took our order 20 minutes after we were seated; that was about the only time we saw him; he never even welcomed or greeted us, my steak was bloody rare when I ordered it well-done; like the other reviews said, we were misled by different employees about how to get into the show after dinner. WHOLE EXPERIENCE SUCKED! I'll have to fly to N.O. to get good service. Everybody has an attitude. Isn't it common sense that as a waiter, if I am frinedly and polite, that maybe i'll get better tips? Guess this guy doesn't need money! Pros: Easy Valet Parking, Scenery Cons: $15 Valet, Bland "Cajun" Food more

Don't Eat Here Before a Show 11/3/2003

msterling Provided by Partner
A few friends and I purposely had dinner at The Porch before a show so we wouldn't have to rush and wait in line. We were told by the bouncer that after dinner our server would escort us to the music venue as we had our tickets in hand. After finishing dinner, we were then told that we missed the deadline of entering into the venue without waiting in line. The server failed to inform us that the cutoff is 15 minutes prior to the show. I asked to speak with the manager who listened to my valid point, but continued to argue with me. He would not let us onto the floor. We had to go back outside and wait in line for another 15-20 minutes after an expensive dinner. We were furious and dissatisfied with the service. I'll never eat at The Porch again! Cons: Poor Service, Expensive Parking, Long lines more

Casual evening 9/26/2002

eblej Provided by Partner
Usually I don't eat in this kind of very "for the tourist" restaurant but since a good band was playing that specific night I thought why not? I was surprised, the food was good, great service and the whole dinner quite enjoyable. I would recommend the place for a casual evening in LA without big spendings. more

It's The Something at the House of Blues 6/21/2002

I came here for lunch once and never came back again. I had the shrimp po boy and was I disappointed. It lacked flavor--not to mention shrimp. My friend was also disappointed with her dish--lacked flavor, texture, freshness, etc. If you want some real cajun/creole/southern food, stick to the Gumbo Pot, Bourbon Street, or Harold and Belle's. The atmosphere was all right, somewhat contrived. But then again, it is a chain. Cons: bad food more

Good Food 6/13/2002

The food isn't quite as good as the Sunset location, but it's still one of the better deals around Downtown Disney. The shrimp appetizer is always a favorite, as is the buttery sweet cornbread it's served with. If you're looking to save a little money, just order a few of the appetizers and split them, though the Louisiana crawfish is a hard entree to pass up. The drinks are good, and when you're done eating, see if you can make your way outside to the patio for people watching. Pros: good food Cons: crowded, can be a wait more

Bread pudding 5/19/2002

I was really surprised by the quality of the food. Everything was generously seasoned and cooked perfectly. The stand out, though, was the warm and sweet bread pudding. Divine. If you dine in the evening be sure to catch a glance of the city skyline by the back bar. Truly a beautiful view. Pros: great view more
