My parents started going to Hope's fairly religiously back in the late 70's or early 80's every Friday. As a child I went with them occaisonally, but ALWAYS looked forward to the take home box if I didn't. I've had fond memories of this fish & chip ""institution"" my whole life since then. As a family, we even talked about it over the years comparing it to others as we all moved from the area.\r
\r
After moving back into the area following a 20+ year sabbatical on the west side of the state, I couldn't wait to go back to the old place!\r

My wife and I went for my birthday as a special event and I have to say that I was truly disappointed.\r
\r
The service was almost non-existent as one woman was serving the entire restaurant and we had to practically beg her for attention. When we finally got her attention, she didn't act at all interested in helping anyone out. Once the fish finally arrived, it was not what I had remembered for so many years... Although it was somewhat flaky, the breading was not at all what I remembered - light and crispy. Instead it was dense and greasy. My wife barely ate at all, but I had to finish mine just because I was so excited to go back to the old neighborhood and go to my former favorite fish place. ""Former"" being the operative term here... Sorry Hope's, but you lost a customer.
