Hoover Dam - everyone should visit! 8/31/2006

Len, I visited the Hoover Dam back in the early 90's. I was blown away by the sheer size of it. I was young (in my 20's) and thought 'what's the big deal? it's just a dam.' Let me tell you - I recommend to everyone to see the Hoover Dam. PBS has an excellent link for more information: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/hoover/ Here are some fast facts from http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/hoover.html : Fast Facts: At its base, Hoover Dam is as thick (660 feet) as two footballs fields measured end to end. Hoover Dam is 726 feet tall. That's almost 200 feet taller than the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. During peak periods of electrical demands, enough water runs through the generators to fill 15 average-size swimming pools (20,000 gallons each) in one second. There is enough concrete in Hoover Dam (4.5 million cubic yards) to build a two-lane road from Seattle, Washington, to Miami, Florida, or a four-foot-wide sidewalk around the Earth at the Equator. The Hoover Dam is so thick and heavy, it doesn't even need to be curved! It's heavy enough to resist the weight and thrust of the water pushing behind it, but designers thought people would feel safer with a curved design. more

Hoover Dam! 4/17/2006

While visiting Las Vegas we took a day trip to the Hoover Dam and it was very spectacular. We went on the tour and saw the inner workings and it was informative and interesting. One side of the Dam is Nevada and the other side is Arizona. Everyone should see the Hoover Dam at least once. more

Awesome sight...breathtaking! 4/9/2006

We really enjoyed the Hoover Dam! It’s just breathtaking, and it’s amazing to see what man built over the water. It puts you in awe! You can take a tour or just visit on your own. Walk on one side and you’re in Nevada; on the other you are in Arizona. Wild! Drive across it or walk, you won’t be disappointed! more

A must see if in town 8/19/2005

The Hoover Dam has such a large part of Nevada's history. The Hoover Dam is located on the border of Arizona and Nevada. You can walk along the dam and see the amazing amount of work that went into it's building. If you would like, you can even take a tour of the dam on the inside. It's a neat part of history. more

Fun day trip, 20 minutes from Vegas 8/15/2005

Hoover Dam is a great place to tour. Just walking around the top and looking at it is amazing! You can take a tour where they take you down inside the dam. It's amazing to see all the things they have down there. If you've seen Vegas Vacation, they do a good job of representing what the tour is like. Overall it's great for everyone, including families. more
