*Hella* good, but don't be in a rush. 12/27/2006

The only drawback about this place when I went was that there weren't enough staff on hand to handle the post-game crowd. The owner was our server and he was very cool to us. The food here is excellent, even by inherently tasty soul-food standards, and I can't put one dish above another because everything is delicious and generously portioned. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Had to wait for a long time for our food to come out. more

Very Surprised!!! 7/31/2005

Being born and raised in the Bay Area, and trying serveral ethnic cuisines Soul Food is one I just never got around to try. I just happened to stumble upon Chicken N' Waffles one lazy Sunday afternoon.... and it was a great new experience I would revisit. I would even to go to JL Square just to try something new on the menu. Mimi's plate was a great first experience...esp. if you are a lover of Macaroni N' Cheese. I wish I would of tried Soul Food a lot sooner than I did. Great Food, and Restuarant. The Sounds of Motown in the background took the cake for me. Pros: Music playing, Friendly Service, Location more

A Disappointment 7/17/2005

I had high hopes, and was looking forward to some good soul food, but was sorely disappointed. The fried chicken and collard greens weren't bad, but the rest of the food was very sub-par. Avoid the red beans (tasteless) and corn bread (dry). I ordered macaroni and cheese and after waiting 25 minutes was told that they were all out. I tried to substitute a waffle and they refused (hence leaving me with the tasteless red beans). Overall, I would not recommend this place. more

great establishment 3/31/2005

I ordered a large order to go for a school event & it turned out to be a great experience. While I had to wait a little longer than I'd anticipated, it was worth the wait. The food was really good and the people who worked there were extremely friendly. I was very pleased with the way I was treated and the quality of the food. Pros: quality of the food, friendliness of staff, family feel more

Food = Fantastic - Service = Acceptable 2/28/2005

I ordered a breast of chicken, waffle, and grits. I also ordered red beans and rice - the food was delicious. I'd definately go back, but the service was slow. We waited several minutes for our menus and water to be brought to us. We ended up having a really great male server come and take our order. When we got him, the service was acceptable. The prices seemed high for the sides - the small cup of red beans and rice was $3.25, for instance, but the meals seemed to be reasonably priced. Their location right at the corner of Embarcadero and Broadway is expensive rent, I'm guessing. I'd go back, though - the chicken was moist and tender, cooked perfectly, and the waffle was very fresh and tender, but could have been crispier. Those red beans and rice, while smallish portion-wise, were so tasty. more
