The BEST BBQ in UTAH (North of S.L.C.) 2/22/2009

This is THE BBQ. \r Forget Dave's. (the BEST BBQ in the area is three blocks East of Dave's)\r Must try: #1: ""To die for"" ribs. #2: Brisket. #3: Tri-tip Sandwich \r (served only until gone - for lunch on Thursdays).\r Best sides: Blaine's Beans, Aunt Mona's cut corn, Green Salad.\r Located: across from the Hilton Gardens Hotel and Convention Center, \r just north of the Layton Hills Mall.\r Jeff Ray is THE BBQ man (very accomodating). \r This is the guy to go to for BBQ catering.\r more

Best BBQ in the Area 12/22/2008

My whole family, (even the out-of-towners) love this place. When our family comes to visit, they always ask when we're going to Holy Smokes. The owner is a great guy, the offer a military discount, and are always willing to please. The food is too die for, and like otheres have said, there's actual meat on the ribs, the chicken is awesome, and everything tastes homemade and definitely not processed. My husband's favorite part though, is that this place has REAL SWEET TEA, which we can't find anywhere around here. It's definitely somewhere to try, (an fall in love with)! Pros: Good food, good prices, good service more

I'M ADDICTED!!! This is the best BBQ place I have ever eaten at! 11/20/2008

Okay so I'm not a chicken wing girl, bones on chicken wings kinda freak me out, but the wings at Holy Smoke are crisp and the Spicy Plum sauce is AMAZING!! I'm in absolute LOVE with this place! Thier beef brisket is so yummy, pulled pork, pulled chicken, quarter chicken, just to name a few that I have personally had are WOW!! My husband loves the ribs, because there's actually meat on them, not just all bones! They also have corn muffins that I could eat a million of! \r They have about 6 or 7 sauces that you can try, the spicy chili berry (I think that's it's name) is my favorite, and the best part is they will sell you a bottle of whatever sauce you want! I love the sauces so much I am going to buy a bunch for Christmas presents! \r I don't think it's that out of the way, but it is kind of hidden. Close to the mall and busy Antelope Drive though. \r \r YOU HAVE TO TRY IT, TRUST ME!!! Or maybe you should stay far far away from it, because believe me it is addicting! Pros: Great variety, GREAT tasting food, lots of choices, and everything else! Cons: That I can't eat there for every meal! more

Lots of choices, all good. Chicken is excellent 9/6/2008

It's a bit out of the way, but worth the detour and drive for good bbq. All bbq restaurants have the issue that the food takes hours and hours of prep. It can't be served fresh off the smoker to the diner. There's no way to schedule it.\r \r Holy Smoke reheats most of their meats on the grill with a slather of a mild runny sauce to keep the meat moist as it reheats. I prefer a dry rib and don't want my rib slathered with sauce until I put the sauce on. However, given the limitations of bbq to order, this was a very good rib. Lots of bbq sauces to choose from, it was easy to find one that matched your taste preferences. Holy Smoke does the grill reheat better than say Famous Dave's who CHAR and BURN every darn rib that reheats on their grill. \r \r The chicken was also heated on the grill. Smoked chicken is tricky. Cooked like ribs or shoulder, it comes out soft and mushy with icky rubbery skin. Cooked hotter, the skin and flesh firm up, but the skin is a loss when held for service. So the grill re-heat really crisped the skin of this chicken. The chicken was done right in the first place. Nice smokey flavor and flavor throughout the meat, not just at the skin. Firm, not mushy flesh and nice crispiness to the skin. The chicken with the white bbq sauce had the right balance of heat too. \r \r Pulled pork was next. No grill or steamtable so I think a microwave was involved. Still, it was a good mix of bark and inner meat which paired well with many of the different barbecue sauces. It was served moist which was a plus. Too many bbq joints in Utah serve a dry and tough pulled pork from sitting in a steamtable. \r \r Lunch business picked up while I was eating and it became pretty busy. You order at the counter and you're on your own for service after that. That's Ok. Not fancy or fine dining, but it works. The menu is diverse for a bbq joint. Sausage and sandwiches. Pulled chicken or pork, plenty of sides too. The sides I sampled were nothing special but not objectionable. Pros: high grade barbecue cooked on the premises Cons: out of the way more
