Hires Big H

Been going since I was a kid. Still have gone because even though the service isn't great, the food is. However tonight my boyfriend and I went, and he ordered a root beer. He finished it off during the long wait for our food and was playing with the straw in the ice. He turns to me saying ""Honey....."" and I look over to see a pubic hair perched on the straw. We looked at each other not sure what to do, then tried to call for the waitress. She didn't respond so my boyfriend got up trying to talk to her and the manager came over asking what the problem was. We showed him. His comment was ""That's.... awkward,"" and he offered to upsize my boyfriend's drink. We sat there for a moment looking at each other but I was so put off my food we decided to leave. We let the manager know and he asked if we wanted the food to go. We said no, we just were going to leave, to which his comment was ""Just so you know, that hair doesn't match any of our coworkers."" Being that it was a pubic hair, I'm seriously not sure how he would know that. Seriously grossed out at this point, we went elsewhere. At this point it's going to be awhile till we go back (if ever). more

I will admit that the homemade root beer and fry sauce is a nice touch but overall this place really didn't ""wow"" me at all. It's just another burger and fry place. My hubby had a burger with fries and I had a turkey sandwich. Everything tasted great but the prices were a little much. We would much rather go to Five Guys for a burger. After eating at Hires I will never go back. My burger at Hires was grossly overcooked and I had to reassemble it because it was haphazardly put together. I never found a server or manager to fix it for me. I stepped in a puddle of soda right in front of the door way that no one had bothered to clean up. If you want a good burger Hires Big H has about the best burgers in the Salt Lake City area. They are 10 times better then Astro Burger or Crown Burger, or Carls Jr. Or Sonic. They aren't the best burgers i've ever had but it is hard to beet there burgers. Pros: Lots of choices more

I haven't been to Hires in 8 years because of my first experience. My wife and I gave it another try recently, only to be dissapointed. Don't get me wrong, Hires has a good burger. However, I simply could not get over the tiny uncomfortable tables, gray walls, filthy floor, lack of music, and terrible service. Why have a wait staff if a) they don't get drinks before your order, b) they take forever, c) you still have to wait at the register, d) none of the tables are pre-bussed? I'd have to say, I really like Big Hires H burgers, but the wait makes them a little more on the average side. more

Hires has (so far) the best Shakes, my fav. is the raspberry. Their fries and Halibut sandwich are really good also. The only thing that I don't care for, is how long it takes to get your food(even just a shake, it usually takes 5-10 minutes). They are a little pricey for a burger place. But still good! :) Besides that, the only other thing I don't care for is trying to get into/ or out of the parking lot(it can be a bit of a pain). Pros: Good food Cons: a little expensive more

The burgers, fries, and shakes are very good here -generous, fresh and filling. But you must try the grilled ham and cheese with a frosty mug of RB sitting in your car on a sunny winter day - nothing beats it. Hires is the best!! I live in Arizona and whenever I go to Utah to visit relatives, we HAVE to stop at Hires. The food and service and heck even price are awesome. I was craving a bug juicey hamburger, so I decided to pop on over to Hires for lunch. I ordered their signature burger to go and waited...and waited...and waited. Finally after 25 min of WAITING for a BURGER I asked the cashier how much longer it would be. He gave me a soggy, mediocre burger with a very small portion of fries. My iced tea should have been called ice and tea and ice. It was way too expensive for a mediocre burger. Next time I want a real burger I will head to the Training Table or Crown Burger. more

My personal favorite is the Golden H. It has onion rings, tomato, lettuce, & a sauce. I recommend it to everyone. more

My husband and I, having moved to Florida, made a list the other night of the things we miss most about Salt Lake. Hires Big H was in the top ten...where else can you go for a perfect, old-fashioned burger with real fries, real milkshakes, or a real vanilla coke? Hands down, Hires Big H is the real deal.
