Best

My sister and I had a hot and hardy meal after camping the night before in Bristol, TN. We were looking for a hot home cooked meal and we got more than we bargained for! The cat...

Imagine Mel's Diner...but much friendlier! 9/3/2006

Hillbilly Cabin is one of those rare mom-and-pop places that can serve up some delicious feel. And the casual, everyone-knows-everyone atmosphere does put you in mind of Mel's place, made famous by the sitcom "Alice" back in the 70s. Similarities stop there, though. First, the food is great. I mean really great. Call it southern cooking or country cooking or whatever. Just check your calorie counters and your sodium guides at the door. (Actually, the salads are good so it is possible to eat a healthy meal. But who is going to choose a salad over chicken and dumplings?) The food is good. It can be salty and greasy if you've never had home cooking before. It's much better than what is served at the Cracker Barrell or Bob Evans. It's the real stuff. Breakfast can be had for a little as $3, but you might want to allow $5-7 to get the full effect. At breakfast, I always make sure I get the hashbrowns. For lunch, I go toward some of their daily specials. They offer everything from sandwiches to delicious stuff that you know has been slow cooking all morning! You always get plenty of food and you'll find your coffee cup or iced tea glass never goes empty! The waitresses are also great. They're always friendly and really take care of the customers. The only complaint I have about the restaurant is that the no smoking section is small, if it even exists. It's a big open room, so you can't really rope off the smoke. Then again, that might take away from some of the atmosphere as well. On Saturdays, you may want to leave early for breakfast. It is crowded at most meals, but other than the weekend morning meals, you'll seldom have to wait too long. The restaurant is located in radio center, just off 160 as you're going toward downtown.
