This was our favorite restaurant in the Richmond area. We had been going there for about 10 years, loved the food, staff was fantastic, cannot say enough about the place. i just wanted to let everyone know that HILL CITY chop house is now closed. So sad...had a lot of good memories, met a lot of great people my 7 years being there. So I just wanted to let people know that its closed and NEVER OPENING BACK UP!!! No more crabcakes, boatload of shrimp, 5.99 lunches.....so sad my heart is heavy but just wanted to share the news!!! more

My family has been going here for years the rolls are great the seafood good especially the Boathouse shrimp. But we went in there recently for dinner and they would not serve me the boathouse shrimp they said it was only a lunch special and brunch special. I told the server that I always ordered it at lunch, brunch and dinner that the dinner price is $6.00 dollars more and a little bigger. It is not on the menu though the server said she knew that other people ordered it all the time as well. The server needed the manager to put the order in he said he would not do it. He was to busy socializing on the bench. To lazy to get up.He never even came to the table. We havent been back since it is unfortunate that when you like a restaurant and the food is good that a manager not wanting to do his job can ruin it for you. They should put the shrimp on the regular menu it is great. Then the manager wont have to be bothered. more

I have dined at this restaurant for several years and quite often and I have never had a meal I did not love! The steaks are excellent and the lunch menu is wonderful, affordable and you never leave hungry after lunch or dinner. The boatload of shrimp and the steaks are my favorites, but everything I have ever ordered there was delicious! You can't beat the price for the portion and flavor of the meals there.\r If you haven't been there, you need to go. It's number one on my list! more

This use to be my favorite place to eat. Loved the roast beef. On my last visit I had a waitress with a totally BAD ATTITUDE. Arriving at my table we had to wait awhile. So we asked another waiter to get our waitress. When she arrived we had to get her attention. When she finally spoke to us I could not understand her and I told her so. So she gestures with her hands as if to say DRINK DRINK in a rather rude way. In a rascist way. I was offended. So when she went to get our drinks I whispered to my wife that this lady was rude to me and she had noticed it too. When she brought our drinks I noticed my glass was dirty. It had food particles in it. We brought it up to her. She did not even apologize to me or even talk to me. Good no tip for her. I have eaten there for lunch for the past 3 years but will not return. I can go down the road to Ashland and have the same roast beef at a competing restaurant. Believe me food tastes the worst when you have bad service!!!!!! By far the most for any family. High Class, Best cooked and tasting steaks and OH their yeast rolls are to live for. VERY reasonable pricing. Best prices in VA. This is located in Virginia Center Commons on number 1 Hwy. On the Right coming from 295 and on the left coming from 95 at Atlee and Elmont. If you don't try this place that's OK It just means more for us here in Ashland and surrounding areas. I have eaten at the Best and the worst and by far this IS MY NUMBER 1 DINING EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!! My fire department eats here every year when attending the state fire training school in Caroline. We always choose this resteraunt because of the quality of the food and the prices are not bad at all for the quantity. However, it remains in question if we will return another year as we had an extremely unpleasant experience this year with the manager Larry. Pros: Great food with reasonable prices. I'm a food expert. As a traveling horseshoe farrier, I eat well & out alot. I'll spare you the details but I'm looking at 387lbs on my portly 5'5"" frame. When I'm in VA, I stuff my face @ the Chophouse. I like to eat alone but that doesn't stop the staff from chatting w/me. My wife sometimes comes (you know, ball and chain...) and she knows all their names and thinks they're good people too. I enjoy the fat & juicy COCONUT shrimp because it's heavily breaded (w/coconut). And the sauce, oh the sauce will melt out of your mouth & mess the napkin. I forgot the bread! They give you bread BEFORE the meal, no matter what! No one does this anymore and I appreciate it. Did I mention it's all you can EAT bread? It's a slightly sweet tasting treat & it's not just hot, it's PIPING hot! The butter on the side looks like a little scoop of vanilla ICECREAM. You know what I mean, it's funny how they do that. OK, I usually just get soda to drink since the liver thing a few years ago (12 steps), but they have a good assortment of the hooch if you need it. Big people drinks are all there. I like the soda @Chophouse better than the stuff at the store. They give you more if you run out so theres that too. My other usual appetizer is the chicken tenders w/fries (they give you slaw with it, but I don't believe in cabbage) and it's a meal itself! I estimate it's about 3lbs of white meat that they MAKE there. NO FROZEN JUNK HERE! The fries are SEASONED. Then I get the half slab dinner-babyback ribs. RIBS!!! For the main course, I like to get the 20oz K.C. strip with a side of 16oz All AMERICAN sirloin. I ask for a triple helping of mushrooms & onions to get my five veggies a day. There's a manager there I think might be sweet on my wife since he always talks to us but it's alright! The atmosphere is slightly chilly (OK since I sweat when I eat) but very nice & old timey. They have booths & ketchup IS provided. The glasses are like the ones I have at home. The mints are green PINWHEEL type. Pros: The food is great. The place it immaculate. The staff is friendly. I have been visiting the chop-house for several years and have always enjoyed the hooottttt bread!!! hott bread is the best around. The fried seafood platter is amazing and the crab cakes ares always pan sauteed to extra-dimensional perfection. The steaks are glorious The cook even offers to meet and greet when available.. he is so personable and friendly oh god his name is tony !!: ) If you have time to stop into the chop house definitely do so!!! My wife and I are regulars at The Hill City Chop House, and the staff is great. The managers (esp. Larry)\r go out of their way to make us feel welcome. The food is a very good value, and great quality. I recommend \r this place to anyone who wants a tasty, homemade meal served by warm, attentive people. I have been a repeat customer of HCCH for several years now. My family and I choose to eat there at least 3 times a week. It is a family atmosphere and on Sunday morning you are sure to see the same customers just like us each week. Many of them we have come to know on first name bases. The staff there is excellent several of the servers have been there for many years Erica, Melody, Will and Cheryl just to name a few. They make you feel welcome know your name and often suggest what to get and know what we like. I suggest this resturant to any one who loves a good steak the steak butter (OMG) and a warm atmosphere. You are guarenteed to get the service you so desire. The Management staff is often seen walking around the resturants to get to know the customers and to make sure everything is to your liking. If not the will not hesitate to fix it and make it right. They also have new cherry cobbler and its to die for. Pros: Service, Bar Cons: wear a jacket it maybe chili more

This place leaves much to be desired. After being seated with a business associate, getting our drinks(mine spilled all over the bev nap and table), and a bread basket ""tossed"" on our table we had to wait about 10 minutes to order. The food was decent but the service never got any better. After having to wait awhile for a check and of course the waitress to run the credit card we were headed back to the office when......the waitress comes out the front door and over to my car. Thinking we had left something behind I rolled down the window only to find her being even more rude then before asking why in the hell she didn't get a tip was something wrong, what was my problem?!?! If she had allowed me to speak I would have told her I picked up the wrong receipt(the one with the tip) but she never slowed down to listen. Being shocked at what was happening we drove away. I called the restuarant the next day and was told I would receive a call from the general manager the next day....that was three days ago!! And to top off my GREAT experience my card was charged twice!!! Now you can see why this is title DON'T BOTHER. This is not a restuarant it is a JOKE!!!! PLEASE SOMEONE SHUT THE DOORS!!!! SAVE US THE HASTLE!!!! I LOVE Hill City Chop House. We moved to Virginia a little over a year ago and frequently eat out in the Greater Richmond area and have yet to find anywhere as good as this place. Hill City is the first place we have gone that we have talked about or would recommend! The fried seafood is cooked light and golden...pure perfection and the smothered porkchops are the bomb! Last but not least, the ribs are to die for! Also I never refuse the offer for more rolls, they are nice and heavy and full of flavor! We have never had bad service there and love the atmosphere, especially if you can get a booth! This will be the only place we will take family from now on when they visit from ""back home"". I had an amazing experence when i went to hill chit chop house. Now it makes me want to go back. Everytime someone asks where I want to eat I say ""hill city of course"". I had an amazing server, I believe his name was Nate. And the Hostess were so nice to me. One stuck out who was by far nice. Tiffany I believe she said her name was. I ate steak it was cooked to the tempature that i wanted and had no problems. I never had to ask for a refill Nate was always on top of things. That place looks like its alot of fun workin there. Everyone seems to like everyone. You can see it on their faces. So over all it was a very great time I had their. Everytime I ordered and alcoholic drink it was just right. There wasn't too much or not enough alcohol in it. You all should check it out for yourself. I totally enjoyed myself!!!!! Pros: food was just right..... server was always there for me!!! We have eaten at The Chop House several times, some good, some not as good. We have never had a manager stop by and ask about anything. Today was a not so good day, I ordered the Greek Chicken Salad, it sounded good on the menu-,iceburg and romaine,pepperoncini, grape tomatoes, golden raisins, walnuts, feta cheese, black olives,marinaded chicken...Well it had the lettuce, lots of walnuts and feta and those nasty little California black olives (in a Greek salad!) and the chicken. When I mentioned to the waiter that the peppers and raisins were missing (I forgot about the tomatoes) he said 'They are usually on the bottom' I showed him they weren't there and he offered to bring me some peppers if I wanted them. Again no manager ever showed up, no compensation on the bill and no apology. I feel that when your server knows that what he brought you is not what you ordered, someone should apologize. I don't understand the comments made about the restaurant and the service. I eat at the chop house about 3x a month, love the food and always asks for 2 specific servers and 1 is Cheryl. From the 1st time she served me I remember how friendly and professional she was and still serves me with a smile. I advise all my friends and co-workers to go the restuarant. The food is delicious and the service is outstanding. Seems like someone else had the attitude that night, which is understandable since you just lost a close friend...As far as the food goes...Check out the new menu, they have added an oyster bar ~!!!!\r \r critic1234 more

Feb 20'07 @ 7:57pm, a group of ladies, party of 4, went there to talk and relax. We just lost a good friend. We ordered drinks and appetizers. My drink had a fruit fly floating around in it. Informed the waitress (Cheryl) who said oh it's JUST a fruit fly. I informed her I wanted a different drink. The attitude appeared. Throughout the night no MANAGER ever visited our table to see what happened. We asked our waitress was there a manager on duty, she said yes. Waiting for a manager to visit our table. NO SHOW!! I informed the waitress ""It's really strange no one as come to our table to check on us, especially since a FRUIT FLY was in my drink"" She said she would tell him. VERY POOR SERVICE/MANAGEMENT. Still NO SHOW!! I did not receive an apology or even a discount off my bill. When leaving she immediately ran to the door to ask if anyone at our table paid with a credit card. She should have known how we paid, we were the last customers to leave before closing. I guess that was due to NO TIP left on the table. Everyone in our party states we will NEVER visit that restaurant AGAIN!! Pros: The food came out in a timely manner. Cons: Terrible service from waitress/management more

Because it would be a shame to go here and not partake of quality dead animal!\r \r Some people on this review page have no idea what they're talking about. Have they ever eaten before?! Chophouse is one of the best dead animal houses in town. In my opinion, one of the best anywhere. If you like ribs, beware: If you have Chophouse ribs you will not want ribs anywhere else! When you order your full rackofribs, you HAVE to ask for an extra cup of their BBQ sauce. It's their own special concoction and they don't sell it separately. It's so good you'll feel guilty. Not to mention the size/portion of the fullrack... holy cow!! That goes for all their dishes. The baked potato is excellent and their steaks are perfect! If I remember correctly, the shrimp is also quality. \r \r The atmosphere is very good with a very cozy, hardwood and stone finish. The only thing that is slightly distracting and not cool is their wierd, tasteless art hanging from the ceiling featuring a homeless person, a prison inmate and some other stuff. Maybe I just don't understand it, but it doesn't add to the atmosphere. That's the only reason Chophouse doesn't get a full-on 10. Anyway, that is a small complaint and shouldn't be a reason to avoid the restaurant.\r \r The wait staff is snappy (as in fast) and they take care of business and provide good service. I realize I haven't tried the broader menu, but that is my review of the most important items on the menu. My wife and I are going tonight!
