The Country Goose in Cold Spring, New York, is half general store/ half gourmet food emporium. It carries all sorts of handy implements and gadgets for the cook [need something to keep the edge of the pie crust from burning because THIS pie filling needs to stay in the oven an extra long time?] as well as coffees, teas, crackers, pastas, spices, chocolates, other fascinating food items and attractive serving items and accessories like cups, mugs, tea pots, spice grinders, coffee makers and carafes. To name a few. The Country Goose also carries witty novelties and amusements for children that over the years have been birthday present staples for my nieces, nephews and other young friends. The organizing genius of this diverse assortment is Leonora Burton, a Welshwoman who can tell you what you need to solve this or that cooking problem plus explain how to use it. She also does tremendous gift baskets that, of all the ones I have ever seen, give value without fail for the money, gift baskets that will actually be appreciated. All of this is strong paise I know, but I have been going into the Country Goose for years to pick up this or that or just to spend an enjoyable moment seeing what Leonora has on hand right now. And also to engage in freely given repartee. If I ever move away from here, I hope it will be to a place that has something like the Country Goose but I doubt it. You will note that I gave the Country Goose a 5 star rating. That is explained as "perfect" and how could anything be perfect. The reason is that I cannot imagine how it could be better.
